T.W.I.B. This week in baseball tapes, dvd's??

Does anybody know of any tapes or Dvd's that exist of the original This Weeek in Baseball with Mel Allen? I would love to get some of those late 70's early 80's episodes.

Me, too! Seriously, though, I think MLB and the NFL, especially, are sitting on a potential gold mine if they were to release old stuff like this. Complete, unedited, baseball and football games from the past would be very nice to be able to buy. I'm sure some day it will happen, but when?

I have watched episodes on ESPN Classic in the last 12 months. They are awesome. Mel Allen was the man, especially when I was a kid.

Do you guys remember "The Baseball Bunch" with Johnny Bench? He would have a bunch of kids and another MLB star would give them tips on playing the game. I wanted to be on that show *so* bad when I was like 10. Great, great stuff.

I can't tell you how many times as a kid i would watch both of the shows mentioned and as soon as they were over i'd grab my glove, call my buddys and go play some ball.

Those were the good days !

Mel Allen was great . How about that !!

I think I have alot of them on video starting from 1982 or 83. I forgot when I stopped taping them. I have all my old sports videos at my parent's house so I'll check them out this weekend.

It'll be sooner rather than later. The NFL is in the process of digitally converting their entire library of footage for use in just such a venture.

  • Hey pomobileclk see what you can find. I would be happy to tranfer them over to dvd if need be. I was actually looking for anyone who had any of these episodes. I believe it started in 1978. Does anyone know if ESPN classic is still showing them??
And for the record the NBA did a horrible job of properly saving their master tapes. Many games are lost forever. I collect a lot of old Bucks games so I have a good idea of what's out there. It looks like the NFL did a better job.

I remember I started taping them the year the Braves started off the season with a long winning streak, 1982 or 83? I also have alot of complete games on video, like Clemens' 20 K game against Seattle, Mike Scott no hitter to clinch the 86 division, Bill Murray doing a Cubs game, Cubs vs Phillies 23-22, Super Bowl 3 Jets-Colts. One day, I should just put together a list of what I have. If you check Ebay, there's lots of sellers selling complete games on DVD or VHS

Boy that brings back some great memories, watching TWIB on a Saturday. This weeks TWIBs Notes. I can just hear that background music during the replays playing right now. Da, da Da, da, Da, da (best way I can describe it).

That would be 1982, also the first year I got cable. I remember watching the Braves every night that year - they were on 147 times!

You wouldn't happen to have the 1984 World Series, 1988 NBA Finals, or the 1989 NBA Finals, would you?

There is a wonderful series of DVD's available chronicling the super bowls. They are available in 10 year chunks, or you can buy the first 30 in one big set.

I suspect you will see more of the sports stuff when HD DVD/ blue ray becomes a reality early next year, as it will allow for a great deal more storage.

I think there is a ton of untapped money not being made in the sports market....when I see stuff like 'saved by the bell season 3' available on dvd, but so little sports material, I have to wonder why.

Well I love the idea of doing a pay per view type deal. I wouldn't think twice about paying $5.00-$10.00 if I could order a Bucks game from the'77-78 season! Maybe one day. I'm in the process now of transfering all my vhs games over to dvd-r. Takes up less space and is a more stable format.

My physics ii professor was a big laser guy, and he'd often talk about that, but of course, in a convoluted physics manner. It's amazing how much more storage they can obtain using the 400nm blue laser. Current DVDs are 4.7GB per layer so 18.8GB per disc whereas with these can get up to 50 (blu ray) - 60GB (hd) per disc.

Also stuff like MLB.TV has a large archive of games that can be downloaded though the quality isn't the best.

Got back from my parents and brought back a few of my old videos to look at. I started taping them in 1982 and stopped in 1988 on a 6hr Speed. I started looking at my 1982 baseball tape and besides TWIB,I also found I also taped several of HBO's Race For The Pennant w/Tim McCarver, and some of the 15 minute pre-game shows for the NBC Game of the Week. Having not seen them in 20 years, it was fun to see all the players I forgot about. The big I noticed was how skinny and small all the players were. I also bought a DVD Recorder last year to convert all my sports tapes, so I guess this will be my next project.

As for the 1984 World Series, I have the entire series but I edited all the games and kept only the parts where someone made an out,got a hit or something happened. I did that so I could fit an entire series on 1 vhs tape instead of 5 or 6 tapes.

Well blank tapes were pretty pricey back then so that might be the reason more stuff isn't circulating. People just taped over it. Would be interested in the TWIB stuff if you get it transfered.

I remember paying about $90.00 for a box of 10 TDK T120 when I first got my VCR. I would be interested in trading for any games that I don't have.
