Bad News Bears - Great Movie?

Caught this movie on HBO tonight (it's been a while) and it's funnier now to me now than when I remember watching it when I was younger.
I was thinking that there would be no way this film would get made today as it is...with the language and racial epithets. I heard that they were remaking it, and found it was true. Billy Bob Thorton attempting to reprise Walter Matthau? I think it's going to be bad.

It looks pretty bad and over the top, in a bad way.
There is a scene with BB Thornton passed out on the field and the kids know hes drunk.
There is a scene where he is hitting ground balls to a kid in a wheelchair and they are bouncing off the metal chair.
If I were Billy Bob Thornton, I would be ashamed to have my name put on this.
The rest looked like it was lifted directly from the original (girl pitcher, rough biker kid throws in ball from outfield, etc.). Im guessing I saw the two funniest parts in the preview.
Im getting sick of the remakes. Cant anyone come up with something original anymore?

That single statements is why the movie business is suffering through such an abysmal season.
I think they felt they had to go over the top with the remakes, but that takes away from the charm of the original.

When Thornton and Angelina Jolie were the Couple of the Moment, I once saw a newsclip of them getting out of a stretch limosine at a red-carpet event and Billy Bob announced to the world "We just f**ked in the limo!" Naw, I don't think ol' Billy Bob knows the meaning of the word "ashamed".
<< <i>I tried renting the movie at Blockbuster, but there still out. I was going to watch it again with my kids. The sequels were funny as well - especially when they play in the Astro Dome. >>
I was able to buy it at best buy for $5.99...its anamorphic widescreen too!

Wow you get that excited about your posts to me that you get them mixed up?
2 words spammy:
seek counseling.
<< <i>I love the original!! Remake bad!! Why make one??? >>
Not because Hollywood is out of ideas, but for the same reason Reality TV is so popular: it doesn't take any originality and therefore cheaper to make.
Look at how many movies are either remakes or sequels these days....and it's not going to change anytime soon.

You mean to tell me you didn't think Spiderman 2 was better than the first one????
I certainly did.
I think it may be the only exception to what appears to be "the rule".
