1961 Topps Norm Cash PSA 8 - Overpaying on ebay?

In a soft market for 61 Topps lately I was surprised to see this card go for over $80! It would typically go for about $25.

This buyer gs65 has also been bidding hard and heavy for 65 topps cards that in most cases can be had for 15 to 20 bucks and has paid 35 plus. I recently saw him (I think) pay 47.00 for an ed bressoud in 8. some guys come on like gangbusters then burn out . he may be that type of guy.
looking at some of his feedback it appears he is into about 8 sets. God Bless him.

Not just 65's, but 66's and 68's as well - he's driving up the price on PSA 8 and 9 commons beyond belief. At first, I noticed he bid the moon on Red Sox player cards, but now it seems like he's all over the place. When a bidder like this emerges, you just have to step back for a moment, let him spend crazy money, and soon enough things go back to normal.

I believe that I picked one up in an 8 less than a year ago for around 20 bucks. The seller got lucky and hit competing bidders.

I don't find that sale odd at all... well centered examples which are clearly high-end cards for the grade always go for a premium, often more than 2X SMR. That Norm Cash card is actually a pretty difficult card to find centered that well. That card looks as close to a 9 as you can get without actually being in a 9 holder. There are only 10 PSA 9's, and I'm certain a PSA 9 of that card would command well in excess of the $110 SMR value. Norm Cash has a cult-like following and the 1961 Topps set is popular amongst collectors.

i agree A7 to a certain degree. if the buyer is happy that is all that truly matters anyway. I know the seller is.

  • Thanks to all for the great input on this thread!

I guess in the final analysis we may never know for sure the buyer's motives and buying strategies... but Steve summed it up when he said "if the buyer is happy thats all that matters...". How true!

A7, I do think the beautiful scan of the card influenced the price, however, the last 50/50 examples that I recall went for $25 and $35 (I bought the one for $25).

Perhaps most sellers under estimate the value of nice scans on their listings. I know that Brian always has nice cards but on top of that he has some SUPER scans that really show them off!
