Bern Baby Bern

All-Time New York Yankee Hit Leaders

Rank Player
1. Lou Gehrig 2721
2. Babe Ruth 2518
3. Mickey Mantle 2415
4. Joe DiMaggio 2214
5. Bernie Williams 2158
6.. Don Mattingly 2153

I would love for Bernie to prove the naysayers wrong and show he is not through. Sure he has slowed down defensively but the guy can still hit and he is heating up. He has always been a notorious slow starter but usually heats up in June or July.

And he's a Hall of Famer right, spammy?

I mean hell, he's played his career in NY. That merits automatic induction, right!

2150 hits? He'll be lucky to top 2300....and that is NOT HoF worthy.

    And?

What does that possibly have to do with the context of his career.

Bernie will join Mattingly as yet another yankee who doesn't make the hall.

Right, they just sweep those under the carpet.

No, but let's put it in context. What player in the history of MLB has the most postseason games played?

Hmmm could it be BERNIE WILLIAMS?

Who's third? Why it's Derek Jeter! And fourth? Yes, another yankee, Tino Martinez! Who are first and second in all-time postseason at bats? Yep, Bernie and Jeter.

Reggie Jackson hit 18 home runs (against bernie's 22) in 200 fewer (!) plate appearances. Jim Thome has 17 HR's in less than half of Bernie's plate appearances.

Yes Bernie holds the record for post season home runs. Of course, he has had (by far) the most opportunities to do so.

Bernie will NOT make it to the hall of fame.

Who holds the record for most postseason strikeouts?

Yep, the so-called 'da leader' Jeter with 85.

Second? spammy's new hero Bernie Williams with 80.

David Justice also had a lot of post season opportunities, yet Bernie passed him.

The reason why Jeter, Williams and Martinez have so many post season at bats is because they work so well together to get into the post season in the first place. The Yankees teams with that trio was an excellent team because of those players. Without them, the Yankees would not be what they were in the 1990's.

If they were so valuable, why are those SAME three players (who are with the yankees now, mind you) unable to keep the yankees above .500?

I mean without them (according to you), the Yankees would not be what they were! Yet here we are, those same three players and the yankees are barely floating.

the same reason the mariners went from 93 wins in 2003 to 99 losses in 2004 with boone, edgar martinez & olerud.....they got old.

Jeter is still at the top of his game, but Martinez and Williams have been injured or not been able to play like they used to. This is partly why the Yankees are sputtering. They have been able to stay above at .500, but they have difficulty getting past third place in the division.

I never made the (incorrect) assumption those three players were the reason the mariners won 116 games like DG made the assumption that Bernie, Jeter, and Martinez were the reason the yankees had so many post season plate appearances.
