All-Star Fanfest - Who's Going?

With the fanfest scheduled to kick off next weekend in Detroit, I was just wondering how many of my fellow registry folks will be attending?

I'll probably attend at least one of the days just to see what its all about.

If anyone is coming to Detroit from out of town and needs hotel or restaurant info and etc., let me or one of the other Detroit locals know. I'm sure we can come up with suggestions.

Later,
Jerry

    Jerry:

I have never been to one of these Fanfests, but am thinking of driving down from outside Toronto. Is there a card show as part of the festivities?

I'm in Detroit and have tickets to it, but I probably won't go... every time I've been to one of these type things, it's just constant tremendously long lines for autographs, and most of the activities cater to kids.

They say there is going to be some sort of memorabilia and cards, but that is not clear, but my guess is that it's going to be a couple guys with a boatload of modern Tigers cards and packs that they are going to be selling for ridiculous money to people who don't know a thing about cards so their kids can have them.

I highly doubt there will be any significant card show, as admission is supposedly limited to an hour, as each ticket has a reserved hour long time slot.

I went a few years ago when the game was in Milwaukee and I had a good time. Most of the stuff is targeted at kids, but there's enough to keep adults interested, too. I did bring my little brother who was probably 11 or so at the time, so we could do some of the kid stuff together. I certainly wouldn't go if you're only looking for cards, though. There were several fairly big names signing autographs, but I wasn't interested in standing in line.

Since I an assume we're all baseball fans, I'd recommend going. It's not something you get to do every year. Bring a kid if you've got one (or your sister/friend/neighbor does) and you'll have an even better time.

(Edited to change "your" to "you're." Yikes. I hate it when I do that!)
  • I agree with ajw.

If your interests are very narrow - you won't have a good time.

I went to it years ago, but that was when I was interested in modern and getting autos - I had a good time.

jerster - there'll be about a dozen of us
depending on if 'Killer' gets out of jail in time to go.

Very nice of you to offer to put us up in your living room for the week.
If you supply the beer, we'll bring more than enough tequila.

Is there plenty of room on your lawn for our Harley's ?

I believe the time on the ticket is just to stagger when people enter. It sets no time limit on how long you can stay there for.
At least this is how it was at the NBA all star game fanfest thing I went to last year. They had exclusive cards from upperdeck and fleer there. I remember from years back that there where special all star game cards that were really expensive at time.

Watching the Tiger game on ESPN this evening......The announcer mentioned that Dimitri Young would be displaying a bunch of his valuable Rookie card collection at the Fan Fest.
