card grading companies/ advice on liquidating collection

I plan on selling some cards for someone in the near future. These include Ryan rookie, 2nd, and 3rd year cards. Bench, Jackson rookies. and a few more expensive cards. I know PCGS recieves the most respect doller wise for coins. Can the same be said for PSA ? I know little about grading cards but except for the Ryan rookie these cards look great to me. The Ryan rookie has some wear on the corners. Any suggestions would be appreciated and I can provide scans or a more complete list if requested. Thanks. Joe

Joe, Go ahead with the scans of the cards you mentioned. I am sure you will get some great advice on what to do. PSA is the way to go for the vintage cards your friend has.

Here are a few of the scans. The Calvin Pickering card is a Presidential Edition #10 of 10.

Joe, I would send in the first 9 cards you have listed to be graded. While I dont see any 10's they look to me like they are gradeable. I think it would help when you go to sell them that they are in a PSA slab.

Thanks Matt. There is also a ton of wax and rack boxes involved and sealed sets also. Autographed stuff as well. I think I read in a thread you can get autographed balls authenticated and graded as well?
Thanks again for your opinion and any others are welcome as well.

    Hi Joe
I was looking at the cards - very nice array - tho there is a lot of corner wear - always hard to see from scans.

    What years are the wax/racks?

What auto balls are we talking about?

I have to check. All this stuff was my dads. We collected all sports from the late 80's to I guess about 2000.
Most was picked up at time of issue. I know there is are some Ryan auto. balls. Also a Ryan auto. book.
a Dimaggio ball. Thiss is off the top of my head. If I remember right he has about 20 copier paper boxes full
    of sealed wax products.

Thinking about it there are also some Mantle coopertown collection figures. A couple 1992 olympic basketball dream team starting line up figures. A Ryan Autographed Rangers Jersey. A 1988 olympic auto. black bat auto in gold. I think it was #/125 or maybe 250. A Mike Schmidt auto bat. A Mays auto. bat. A Barry Bonds auto. bat.

What sort of wax do you have to sell? If it is football or basketball, post the details, since I'm looking for a few things.

I am looking to sell but right now looking for advice as I have not been into this for about 9 years.
I also realize this is not the forum to offer things. I just was not sure if this was the best place to send the cards to be graded as I know from coins the right slab makes a world of difference, and ther is little value when selling anything raw.

I will list on the B/S/T board once I figure out what I have and some kind of value for it.

My recommendation: take it slow and get everything inventories/itemized. Then as you go, please feel free to come on and ask questions. I would like to see scans of the auto items e.g. The easiest way to get an idea of better ebay market values for autos e.g. is to enter - psa/dna - search on ebay and look for comparable items. If you have nice auto items, they will sell better with a psa/dna coa IMO.

For ease of sale, these cards can be PSA graded - again check on ebay - e.g. Ryan PSA for comparable items - from what I can see and this is a guess - no card will grade higher than a PSA 6.

Good luck and all my best

Well I took the first step. I joined at the gold level. They'll send a submission packet out next week.
Now I have 3 questions. How accurate is the on-line price guide?
What does the Q stand for in the grading?
Also in the pop. report some cards are listed as PSA/DNA. I assume these are autographed cards.
    Thanks

    welcome joe

the Q means the card has a qualifier, that is a defect. OC (off center) ST (stained) etc. it usually lowers the card by 2 grades in general. You can request NO QUALIFIERS and that is what Psa will do. Example a card is OC and should grade an 8, your card will in most cases get a grade of 6. could get a lower grade depending on the severity.

The online price guide is just that a guide and many believe it is so outta wack. however many trades are completed using it.

you are correct regarding the psa/dna assumption

    Steve D
    Good for you.

I took a few pictures last week and started to inventory the wax and sets. For now I'll post some pics and will be looking for pricing. Perhaps you guys are mor familar with some of the material. Some of the stuff I know prices from like 10 years ago but they could have gone either way since then.

    Joe,

I'm mostly a hockey guy but as for the signed Mickey Mantle ball if you sold it as is you'll get around $350-$400 for it. If you sent it in to PSA/DNA for authentication and grading you'll get around $700 for it for sure and if it receives a high grade you'll get a lot more than $700 for it.

As for price guides I wouldn't even bother.. Your best bet is to search for each item you have using the eBay completed items search feature and jot down the average prices which the items end for.

Wow Knuckles I hsd no idea. I bought the auto balls mostly off QVC in the 90's and later felt they just put too many on the market. Now I see they are pristine white balls with clear sharp autographs. PSA/DNA will be at a show in Garden City, New York next month and that is less then a hour from me so I guess I'll take a ride out there with the kids. In addition to the 2 Mantle balls and Dimaggio ball there are a few Ryan items, a 300 win ball, strike out leaders. I was suprised to see the prices paid for some of these items. Also a couple Riddel mini helmets aotographed by Ottis Anderson MVP, another Dan Marino, another Vinney Testeverde and last a Jets throwback helmet with the Sack Exchange auto. (Klecko, Gastineau, Lyons and Sallam)
stone193, as far as listing the wax boxes I was a bit disappointed in the e-bay prices on these. Between the sets and wax there are about 300 items and the vast majority are $10 or under. It would probly cost half that to send a wax box. I suppose if anyone is interested and would like we could meet. I would rather spend $10 in gas then $400 in postage. I'll post a partial list of what I consider the highlights. They may be lame now but at the time they were the cats azz. Well I got carried away and listed everything so I could cut and paste a neat list. Joe

its a very nice collection overall, especially the signed stuff.

But since you do not collect baseball cards and memoribilia why didnt you just sell everything to one dealer?

From the couple of dealers near me they buy very low and sell very high and only deal in raw cards. The cards they sell are all mint and if they are willing to buy your card it is at 30-50% of what they would sell it for. If I have a $100 card to sell I would rather sell it to a collector for $75 then to a dealer for $50 who will sell it to the collector for $95. I make more and the collector saves more.
From my experience with coins third party grading enhances the value. It creates a much more liquid sight unseen market.
As for the autographed items I have confidence in them because they were purchased thru say QVC on television which I feel does due dilligence on such things or they were purchased thru scoreboard or similar company. Others were signed in person. Just because I have confidence in the item it is not fair to expect you to.
Third party grading on all these items I feel gives the purchaser the confidence to pay what it is worth.
