'85 t fb wax

I'm thinking about buying a wax box from DACW. One psa 10 will pretty much cover the cost of the box. Are they THAT tough strait out of the pack? Or are multiple 10's a possibility.

I don't know but I've considered the same thing. The black borders are extremely tough so I'd think you'd be lucky to get even one 10 but even 9s of Moon, Elway, Marino, and Montana do well. Let us know if you decide to pull the trigger.

I bought two packs a few months ago.

    Found these problems -

Off right to left on most cards. It's tricky because of the team name and solid color on the right side, which helps with the O/C.

Toning caused by the massive black solid. Ruined a nice Marcus Allen.

Marked changes in color density in the black border. On many cards the top and bottom borders are lighter black than the left border. This happens because the printing press is laying down more black on the top and bottom, but not as much as it prints the picture, so the left border looks much darker.

These packs are the only time that I have gone through in this year so I don't know if it's through the whole set. My guess from my experience in the printing industry and what they were trying to do with these cards is that it is a major problem.

Axtell collects this set - he can offer some input.

I bought a box a year or two ago. There were no sure 9s of the top 10 or so cards (maybe 2 potential 9s, but more likely 8s). I haven't been through the commons to look for 10s, because the box was purchased to build my raw set.

    85's are tough.

Bought two cellos, one wax, and grocery racks that were stained with gum.

Plenty of 8's, a few 9's, and no 10's. Problem is, if you misjudge a card and they come back less than a 9, they are awfully tough to sell. Unless, of course, it is for a personal collection or the registry.

Some of my personal favorites, though!

    Best of luck!

Not to be a killjoy...but's highly (and I mean highly) unlikely that you'll get a 10 out of box. They are THAT tough to pull.

Only 308 10's have been graded in this set out of over 10,000 cards.

Keep in mind you are going to lose at least one card per pack to the gum (and it's nasty), I've opened packs and had up to 3 cards ruined from it.

If you do decide to pull the trigger, keep us informed!

PSA 10s from wax packs/boxes are very difficult pulls ... very rare! These cards have a history of corner pulls, fuzzy edges (from paper fiber) and are typically off centered. The black borders highlight every imperfection.

PSA 10s that do come out of wax are usually slightly undersized (which may offer some protection?), but are well within PSAs standards. Unless you pull a few mint HOF'ers, key RCs, or low population commons, you'll not make a return on your investment. Even PSA 9s are not guaranteed. If you are fortunate enough to pull a PSA 10, it would have to be a population 1/3 or less to command a premium.

The only dealer that's been successful in submitting PSA 10s has been 4 Sharp Corners (Roger). I haven't seen DSL list any PSA 10s for quite a while?

Rack Packs will produce your best chance for PSA 10s. However, I'd encourage purchasing an entire box. Loose packs can be hit or miss due to storage & handling and shipping. You won't lose cards to the sealing process - as with the wax and cello packs. Rack pack boxes are getting very difficult to find and more expensive.

Grocery rack packs are not the same as standard rack packs. These types of packs contain (3) individually wrapped cello packs. Cellos can offer the better edges and centering, however they will have the worst corner wear (which is a killer). However, I did pull 4 of the 7 Walter Payton PSA 9 singles from grocery rack packs.

Vending boxes are the same as any other vending, but they produce the more corner dings and offer less of a player selection. My Marino PSA 10 did come form a vending box submission - purchased from Mint State.

This set has had a recent resurgence, so now would be a great time to submit! There are now 23 sets registered, of which nearly half are in double digits. That may put this set as the most popular '80s mainstream football set? There is the perception that there is a lot of this product produced, but that doesn't necessary translate to mint?! On average, these cards breakdown from unopened material at PSA 7/PSA 8 caliber.
