Steve Young, Jim Kelly in 1984 USFL set (question)

Why is Steve Young so much more difficult than Jim Kelly in the '84 Topps USFL set? There are actually more Youngs (828) than Kellys (649) graded by PSA, but Young has only 71 cards graded 9 Mint while Kelly has 161.

Was Steve in a tough place on the sheet? Is this a tough issue overall?

The sets are hit and miss. I bought a set recently and every 4th card had a print line running through the middle of the card....of course, the Young happened to be one of the cards affected. The White and Kelly both graded an 8.

In addition, the centering is generally very weak and corners tend to be dinged if the set wasn't stored properly. I'm still searching for a nice Young - they're tough to find in PSA 8 and above condition. PSA 9's have been especially strong. One ended recently for $425+.

My PSA 9 Young cost $325, so perhaps I was very lucky. I wonder if Young's placement on the sheet made him at least twice as likely as Kelly to get poor centering or the dreaded print line. Seems logical, since Young's graded 9s are less than half of Kelly's while having more examples graded overall.
