1960's Topps Venezuelans

Some insight into these toughies from a collector who grew up in Venezuela:

* '59, '60, '62, '64, '66 and '68 were distributed in packages, very
similar to those in the U.S. '59 and '60 came with gum. (67SU: not clear what he means by "packages")

* It is not true that '59, '60 and '62s were intended to be glued into albums.

* The paper residue or stains on '62s are due to defective packaging. Every '62 pack had a card with this problem. Other back damage on '59, '60 and '62s are due to glue being applied for purposes other than insertion into an issued album. '64, '66, '67 and '68s came with albums.

* '67 came in three different cheap paper packages. One for
winter, one for Retirados and the other for MLB. Every kid decided what
he wanted to buy, but most of preferred Winter and MLB. Maybe this it is the reason for
scarcity of Retirados. (67SU: only year that Topps let another local company print the cards, that's why they look so different from the other years.)

Thanks for the background and information. I really like those 1967s with the different backs. It is just so impossible to find these any more in decent condition. Anyone with Perez Venezuelans please let me know.

    Very Interesting, thanks!

Just got a 1964 Pete Rose Venezuelan back from PSA. It was graded a 4. Actually thought PSA 'threw me a bone' grading this card as high as a 4! I'm satisfied!

I think the PSA grader took into consideration the low grade cardboard, the overall condition of the entire surviving Topps Venezuelan 1964 series, and may graded this early Topps/Venezuelan "on a curve" LOL!

In any event, I added to my Pete Rose master set (#6).

  • A 4 for a '64 Ven Rose is a very good thing.

    Nice.

  • Pete Rose Master set? I had a PSA 5 '77 Venezuelan for sale, did you bid on it? It sold for $469.

    Hello Steve (aka: SDSportsFan),

I would be happy to post a scan of the 64 Topps Venezuelan #125 Pete Rose PSA 4 (Cert #: 90488834), I should have it in the mail any day now from PSA, except for one thing,

I DON'T HAVE A CLUE ON HOW TO POST A SCAN ON THIS THREAD (OR FOR THAT MATTER, PUTTING "IMAGES" ON MY PSA REGISTRY SETS)

I'LL CALL PSA AND SEE IF THEY WILL HELP ME!

    SORRY!

    I have a 1964 #250 Al Kaline Venezuelan in a PSA 8 HOLDER

Wish I knew how to use my &#^#!@$% scanner, and I would
post a scan of the card. I paid very dearly for that one, as I
actually would for any Kaline Ven in (8)!

So you're the one who bought it. Aside from the big 3 - '59 Mantle, '60 Yaz, and '68 Ryan - I haven't seen a higher Venezuelan sale price. Highest graded star for sure...very nice card.

Thanks for all this great information. Not many people, myself included, know much about how Venezuelan cards were distributed.

The 1972 venezuelans are a tough issue to find-they are little stickers-I collect Brooks Robinson cards and that was the toughest one for me to find-his 1960 (his first year featured) and 1967 came easier-I thought the 67 was going to be hard and pricey because of his regular topps issue 1967-I am having a harder time completing Brooks OPC cards then the Venezelan-I still need a 1965 #1 and #5 and a 1967 #1 OPC card-Any canadian help out there? Thanks Scott
  • Good assesment of the '72 Vens, as it took me 10+ years to find this Yaz:

Dave Levin has a significant selection of '72 Venezuelans, as well as the full-size cards.

Wow that's a nice looking SGC 10! My Aparicio En Accion would get the same grade, but there's no comparison. I know the grade is due to back issues, but still, that should have been a higher grade.
