  • Gemmy - I wonder if the mystery pack is worth much - haven't you tracked down most of the really valuable cards from the set?

Brian, the odds of the Mystery Card being worth a bundle aren't that good. The most valuable cards are Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Munson and Martin.

Here is the breakdown and distribution of possible Mystery cards:

100 Derek Jeter Autographed Bat cards

100 Derek Jeter Autographed Jersey cards

100 Whitey Ford Autographed Bat cards

100 Reggie Jackson Autographed Bat cards

80 Yogi Berra Autographed Bat cards

7 Mickey Mantle Cut Signature Bat cards

3 Babe Ruth Cut Signature Bat cards

3 Babe Ruth Cut Signature cards (without the bat)

3 Lou Gehrig Cut Signature cards

2 Bill Martin Cut Signature cards

2 Thurman Munson “Cut” Signature cards

Gemmy, since you're the expert...how much do the empty boxes go for? They seem really nice and I've got a friend that's a Yankee fan...might make a good present someday.
  • Thanks Gemmy - 4% chance of a cut sig, less than 2% chance of a huge score (ruth or gehrig). I'd imagine if all those biggies are ever accounted for the price for the sealed packs will fall - maybe that's why this guy didn't open it?

Brian, well you can knock one of the Munsons off the list and I have seen Ruth, Gehrig, and Mantle ones on eBay.

AJW, I have a friend who sold an empty box on eBay last year for $400. I saw one go on eBay as low as $100 but they don't come up frequently anymore. Actually the box doesn't look at all like the one pictured in the auction and the box is much nicer and mahogany. The one in the auction is a prototype photo before Upper Deck released on. This is what the box actually looks like:

$400? Wow. If they were $40 I'd buy one. Damn Yankee fans and their fat checkbooks. image

    'Cut' is the right word.

The box is a piece of artwork - a collectible as such. BTW, I emailed the seller - I was wondering what the reserve was - sometimes sellers will LYK.

    Thanx for sharing

The one that Gemmy has is, actually, off the chart! I'ld be proud to own it.

zef204, yes it is. Thanks for the compliment. It one of the two Thurman Munson Mystery Cards in the 2000 Upper Deck Yankee Master Collection. There were orginally 500 sets produced and if you know me from my posts on this board, I keep track of what sets have been broken up on eBay.

The guy has the reserve on the set at 1500$ which to me is not bad at all.

And thanx for reposting the auto - I never get tired of looking at it! Of the two general ways that he had signed, this is the better style of the two IMO.

Mike, thanks again. I have never seen a better auto on eBay.

$1,500 for a Sealed set sounds pretty good although the odds of getting a premium auto Mystery Card are slim at best since most of these sets have been opened and there were so few of the premium autographs to began with. The Yogi and Jeter Bat cards are nice though (Mystery Cards from my two other sets).

Is the mystery card sealed in a pack?
  • Gemmy10Gemmy10 Posts: 2,990
NBAfan, the "Mystery" card is the only one sealed in a blue pinstriped cardboard wrapper which I would think would be easy to reseal. Howerver the whole set is double sealed, first in a soft blue pinstriped cardboard box which is shrink wrapped as in the above auction, then this box is inserted in a thick white cardboard box which is sealed with the Upper Deck logo written on the sealing tape. It appears that the one in the above auction was taken out of the white box. I would not buy the set unless it was still sealed in the white box.

That's what I had figured. The guy busted open the set and checked out the mystery card and probably got a Berra or Jeter, so he reshrunk wrapped the set. $1500 for a "sealed" set that was going for $4000-$6000 just doesn't seem right.
