$5 Jamaica coin in a roll of U.S. Nickles. Did I get ripped ?

I just found a 1996 Jamaican Five dollar coin in a roll of nickles. Is it worth more or less than a nickle ? Also found a damaged 1928 Australia 3 pence in a roll of dimes a couple weeks ago. It looks like it is silver.

I once found a 1917 French 10 centime in a roll of US half dollars...right next to a Franklin half.....kind of appropriate, eh?

    Hello and welcome

Your 1996 Jamaican $5 coin is composed of steel, current Krause listing has a retail value of $2.50 U.S. in UNC condition with nothing listed in lower grades. [KM# 163]

As for the 1922 Australian threepence, it is indeed 92.5% silver. Current Krause values are F $1.75, VF $7.50, XF $21.50, UNC $125.00. [KM# 24] (However, you have hit the jackpot of you have an overstrike 1922/1 version -- look at the second 2 in the date and see if it is superimposed over a visalbe 1. If so, the Krause value is $2,125.00 in fine and goes skyward for better grades.)

    Nice finds!

  • Thanks for the link MacCrimmon. I added it to my favorites list. Bailathacl, the threepence is a 1928 not a 1922.

Nope.. you didn't get "ripped". You got an invitation to the darkside! Someone is trying to tell you something! Why waste your time with those repetitive, boring nickels that won't be worth jack 100 years from now--unless some trigazillionaire needs it for his registry set--when you could be finding all sorts of amazing designs and history you never knew about for less than the price of a Buffalo nick in the same grade! That's the rip off.. the opportunity cost of sifting through nickels per hour until you find one worth.. ooh! $1.25! versus spending $5 on a 100 year old foreign coin in perfect mint condition!

Ooops, shame on my eyes... a 1928 Aussie threepence has Krause values as follows: F $0.50, VF $2.00, XF $16.50, UNC 85.00. Hope you found an UNC....!
