Returned to sender

Today I received this coin and I immediately saw that it was whizzed.

I sent it back, the first one ever as far as I can recall, the good influence of this forum. Are we too difficult as buyers?

You can't tell from the pictures that it's whizzed, at least I couldn't and the description of unc-bu was therefore inaccurate. German coin terminology lately uses unz-stmpl ,which is unc-bu, I only knew of stmpl coins before.

The seller was offended but had no other option but to refund me,as he had already left feedback for me. Clearly, I don't think he understands what I didn't like about his coin despite my comments about whizzing and hairlines that were visible without a magnifier but hidden in the photo, he really thought his coin was first class. image

I've noticed that problem with some dealers in other countries, particularly Brazil. They don't care much about whether a coin is cleaned, and they get offended when an American customer points it out and demands a refund.

Even a no-questions unz would run you about $150 or more wholesale. With stempelglanz (65 or better) you might expect around $275 or so wholesale......

    I once chanced a "deal" from a Swiss unknown on a 1937 2 franc - - -"TOP STGL" . . . yeah, right! It was maybe AU+ (VZ). image

Or this 1 Franken 1909 absolute Granate Stglimage

Udo should enlighten us on this Granate term. The crap I see on various European ebay sites everyday! image It really makes you wish to come across a slabbed example to finish with this agony!

I'd send it back. $90 to me is a pretty good chunk of my coin budget. I usually will keep a less expensive coin that has been whizzed. I set my limit at $10-$15. I'll give it away and maybe intrest somebody in the hobby. I will leave a negative though, especially for sellers that mainly sell coins. If you're main business is coins, you should be able to tell a whizzed or cleaned coin.

You know, a 1900 1 fr. is marginally tougher than an 1899 1 fr., and I sold an 1899 which could truly be described as FDC-prachtexemplar for about $700 a few years ago....go figure.

I guess myself and the ultimate buyer paid too much!! image

Sorry you have to deal with the hassle of the return.

A lot of Brit sellers are selling cleaned and whizzed coins now. I have made several returns there in the last 18 months. That's why you will notice I rarely buy off of ebay anymore unless it is from one of the members here.

"absolute Granate" (grenade) is an unusual term and comparable with the term
"Der absolute Hammer" (That's just about the limit).

Yes, Dimitri, I too have the feeling that more and more crap shows up on ebay, that's one reason, why I started to buy high-value coins in slabs, or from a trusted seller only.

Regarding the "Granate-seller", I never bought a coin from him, but some friends of mine did. They give the advice, always to downgrade his grades. If he states stgl, don't spend more money than you would do for a vz. example.

It's good to hear that you get refunded from this guy, that's also unusual. image
