Earliest complete proof set?

Does anyone know the date of the earliest complete proof set? Do you think that earlier ones could be completed if certain collections were liquidated?

Does the King of Siam set count? If so it would get my vote.

  • I remember seeing quite a collection of proof sets at Long Beach a few years ago. Mike Bobb had complete sets, gold included, for many years in a row. I wish I could remember the details. I think they started in the 1850s or 1860s and went for 30 or 40 years. This included $3 gold, Stellas, all the dollars and odd denomination coins. At the same time he had an Ultra High Relief Saint on display.

I believe the King of Siam set is the earliest. I don't remember the date on it, but I believe it's in the 1830s, with other dated "restrike" coins included. I saw the set in Pittsburgh at the ANA last summer, but only looked at it briefly.

The King of Siam set was made in 1834. Don't know if it is the earliest complete proof set known or not though?

Proofs before 1834 are very spotty and few were made, so it's unlikely to get a set before then.

Pittman had complete sets of I believe 1842, 43, and 45. At last two of these were (the first two I think) were still in the original case from the mint. The 1845 set has since been broken up. The ANS also has two cased sets from the early 1840's. The King of Siam set was not complete when it was discovered in the 1950's. The mising pieces were added to the set when it went on display at the Mandalay Bay Casino in the 1990's.
