Post some photos and tell us what camera gear you're using.

I use a Canon Digital Rebel SLR with a Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lense.
I don't use a copy stand but I do use a very sturdy tripod.
If you saw what I use for lighting, you would laugh your a$$ off.

  • Here is some of my work with a Sony Cybershot 3.2 megapixel. For lights I used 60 watt GE Reveal bulbs in clip-on desk lamps from Wal-Mart.

    Sony DSC-V1 (5 megapixels) I've also got a macro lens for it, though I didn't use it for this shot, I'm more than happy with the quality.

    THANKS ---THANKS -----THANKS ---I still don't have a camera and this thread was very helpful to see what different cameras are capable of.I understand the camera is only pary of the equation but this is the part I needed help with ====thanks again /Don/the digital mademan

    Nikon 8700, testrite copy stand.................dissassembled the lights that attach at a 45% angle

    and hand hold the light to as close as vertical to the coin as I can get......

    Sylvania par 30 (2) bulbs

    Canon G5, copystand, 3 75 watt bulbs in desklamps.

    Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20, hand held, one articulated desk lamp, Compact Halogen bulb (energy efficient bulb), a small sheet of glass (5x9in), and a semi-circular screen of cardboard covered in white paper (to help with my lack of lighting)

    Nikon 4200 held in my right hand, macro mode, coin held in my left hand about 12 inches below a single 50w Reveal bulb in gooseneck desk lamp. Coin on its way back from PCGS in ms66fl slab.

    Nikon Coolpix 4200, handheld using 1 OTT bulb, 1 Reveal bulb and overhead fluorescent's. I will never get the white balance to work properly.

  • I use a 5 year old Toshiba PDR-M60. Hand held, no macro lense. Not the best images in the world but not bad for what is now a pretty cheap camera.

    The camera lays on top of the Rubix cube, so it can be kept steady. Yea, real fancy set-up.

    I use the same camera and lens, but I also use a Testrite copy stand. For lighting I usually use one Reveal bulb, but sometimes use OTT lights or Sylvania Daylight Pluss bulbs.

    The 4300 is a great little Camera ( fits in your shirt pocket ) only down side is it has a slight delays in focusing and next photo...

    Not a big deal with coins but I use it fly fishing and it can be a pain but Ive learned to work around it...

    He was very photogenic and did not mind the light, it was the 3 miles of extension cords that was a bear...
