Can you name some things that all coin collectors seem to have in common?

I wonder if this hobby appeals to people for basically the same reasons. I wonder if the same types of people - or people with similar outlooks on life - are drawn to collect coins.

In your experience dealing with collectors, have you noticed any traits that most of them seem to share? Personality type... energy level... amount of ambition... level of intelegence... disposition... penmenship... ability to spell (or lack thereof)... inclination for solving math problems... ability to resolve conflicts... etc.

Are there any common threads?

Dan

We all like to argue, whether we like to admit it or not.

While we aren't necessarily born shrewd, most get that way after a while.

Seems to me collectors tend to be interested in history, mathematically adept, detail-oriented, generally of average or better intelligence, and visually perceptive down to a very micro level. I think we tend toward being introverted and socially awkward. While there are obviously all kinds of exceptions to this, I think on the whole we run toward being the kids who were inside poking pennies in our Whitman folders while another sort of kid was out playing baseball.

One thing they all seem to have in common, is having some coins.

No sense of value. Who else but a coin collector would spend a insane amount of money for a cent, nickle, dime, quarter, half or a dollar. Anyone in the right frame of mind knows that they are only worth face value.

Some coin collectors do like Baseball also.

    What everyone else said.

We're also very sexy, a little conservative, and have a wider perspective.

We tend to be better at seeing things in context of culture and time.

I'd say coin collectors have the need to organize and categorize and do "research" of some kind.

We're not cheap; we're thrifty.image Actually, the opposite is true; we sometimes pay insane amounts of money for what was once pocket change. History and coins do seem to compliment each other. We also have great attention to detail - who else would look at a coin under 10x magnification. For many of us it's also a hobby that we enjoyed as a youth, didn't bother with for decades and is now all-consuming again.image
