50 Most Popular US Gold Coins, Part II

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
This Pinnacle article has not yet been posted. Does anyone want to make some predictions as to what might be on the list and why? Here are 5 eagles and double eagles that should make the list:

1799 Eagle: Not rare, but popular as an affordable (relatively) 18th century gold coin
1841-O Eagle: The most scarce New Orleans eagles and one of the most difficult Coronet eagles from any mint
1850 Double Eagle: First year of issue of the popular $20 Lib series.
1861-O Double Eagle: Historic and scarce, about 1/3 minted each by the US, State of Louisiana, and Confederacy
1870-CC Double Eagle: The granddaddy of this difficult, long, and popular series and the first $20 issue from the popular Carson City mint.

Man you beat me to it. Yes maybe "most sought after" by advanced gold collectors but far from "most popular".image

1861-S $20 with the Pacquet reverse.
  • 1908 D Saint-Gaudens Indian head Eagle, rarest of the no motto series but still affordable in lower mint state.
I agree with the 1861 O and 1861 S Paquet double eagles, these are two of my fantasy coins.

    No one else is biting...

1838/1839 (Head of 1838) Eagle: Transitional years with slanted head (or off-center date, depending on perspective).
1875 Eagle: Classic rarity, only seen in major auctions.
1907 Eagle: Popular first year of issue of a favorite design.
1854-S Double Eagle: First $20 Lib from the San Francisco Mint, scarce in higher (non-seawater) grades.
1907 HR Double Eagle: One of the most desired US gold coins.

  • OK then how about the following double eagles: 1879-O, 1902 in mint state, 1908-S, 1920-S and the 1909/8 double eagle as the only Saint-Gaudens overdate.
don't forget the1879-CC eagle for its rarity, the 1891-CC eagle for its availability and finally the 1893-CC eagle as an underrated classic
