1970 S Double Die

I am sending a 1970 S double die lincoln cent into PCGS for submission for grading and encapsulation. I discovered that I owned it while catagorizing some 70 S to identify any small dates. This coin was purchased in an ebay auction and at most was a dollar or two with postage. I have owned it for a year or more by now and was finally able to get around to classifying the accumulation.
I am now on the quest for a 69 S double die.
Updates to follow and once graded I'll post photos of the holder and lucky find. I will also play Paul Harvey and post " the rest of the story".image

  • Actually it's doubled die, not double die. Congrats on the find. image

Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies.
  • Actually, according to the Red Book: Double Die - A die that has been given two misaligned impressions from a hub; also a coin made from such a die.

USC - The Red Book is incorrect in this and many other areas. It is indeed "doubled die."

Neptunus Rex - Be wary that there are far more cases of machine doubling on 1970S cents than true hub doubling. You'd be wasting your money to send them a machine doubled coin - make sure you show us an image when it comes back.

i know the 3rd prty grdng srvs` dont want me to say this but, rather than send your coins off in the mail for grading
and if you can take pretty good close-ups of your coins, (we) here could give a fairly accurate grade on prolly most coins.

Yes-the correct term is "Doubled die"-not "Double die."

    Welcome aboard.

Do you know which of the three or four doubled dies this one is?

Yes, to echo what others have said, if you had to classify your coin, you probably don't have "the" 1970-S doubled die. There's only one that's worth slabbing, and it's slap-your-forehead obvious.

Here's a pic of a real one. Check out IN GOD WE TRUST. If yours looks like that -- *exactly* like that -- then super-duper congratulations. Otherwise, sorry for the bad news, but...

Yup, that right there is the monster.

There are others "worth slabbing" but they are proof.

There are some 40 different doubled dies known for the obverse of 1970S cents, by the way...most are quite minor.

  • Thanks for the clarification. The Red Book actually used both terms in different sections of the book.
