Victoria Medal I bought at the coin club meeting ...

Purchased this medal from the same long-time collector as the Jubilee Head stuff I got last month.
The medal is silver, measures about 55mm diameter and about 5mm thick ... it's heavy!!! The obverse is the Victoria "Young Head" by Wyon, surrounded by the legend VICTORIA D:G: BRITANNIARUM REGINA MDCCCXXXVII. Under the bust is the word PATRONA. The reverse is a "sculpture" of a nude human torso and leg, strategically covered by what appears to be fabric. Both the "Young Head" and the torso sculpture include the artist's name, W WYON S on the sculpture, W.WYON R.A. on the bust. Reverse legend ROYAL ACADEMY INSTITVTED MDCCLXVIII . Under the sculpture is the word STVDY .
The edge is engraved (not during the mint process, apparently) TO MR. A. GATLEY, FOR THE BEST MODEL FROM THE LIFE. DECR. 10TH 1844. And it includes the original case.
If any of you know any further information on this medal, I'd sure appreciate it![image](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif)

Becky, you're right ... he's a great guy, and is somewhere around 80 years old I think, and has been downsizing his collection for a while now. I'm fortunate to have met him right now

I'm having a stab in the dark, but could it be like the Medals put out by various societies as prizes etc, but in this case from the Royal Academy ( if my Roman Numerals are correct intstitued in 1768), which was the home of many artists including people like the Wyon family, Jean Baptiste Merlon Sir Thomas Brock, Joseph Edgar Bohem and more recently Ian Rank-Broadly and Timothy Noad.

You may try contacting Daniel Fearon for an attribution on that medal..
In reading his bio, he's certainly one of the top guys in that area of expertise.
Obscurum per obscurius
I find the headless, limbless torso a bit creepy, though.
Just keep it heads-up when you display it.
Seems to me this would've been presented to one of Wyon's students, perhaps (probably?) by Wyon himself.
