What do you think?

Maybe you all could give an idea what I have here.
I was at a yard sale and was looking through a paper bag full of "trash" when I spied a old 3 ring binder with the words "Important Papers" taped to the cover. Looking through the folder it turned out to be a snapshot of the life of a man by the name of Parker "Tommy" Black III.
From the documents in the folder it seemed that Mr. Black was not a very good boy. He, according to official documents from Florida and Arkansas was a guest of the penal system of each respective state. After being paroled from Florida Mr. Black got into some trouble in Texas. Not liking the accomodations there Mr. Black decided to leave without permission. Unfortunately Texas really liked Mr. Black and went out and found him.
Well Three times and your out said the Feds and off to the U.S. Pen at Leavenworth Kansas went Mr. Black. That was in 1968.
Now what does all this have to do with Johnny Cash? Well inside this folder was also a bunch of newspaper clippings detailing some the places Mr. Black had been. One of the clippings was a story from the Kansas City Star with a photo of the Man in Black and his wife June leaving Leavenworth prison after giving a free concert to the inmates there. The paper is dated May 16 1970 The story talked about how Johnny was nice enough to give a couple of the inmates an autograph. In with the clipping was a small piece of paper with...you guessed it...Johnny Cash's auto on it! There is a date scrawled on the paper. May 15 1970! The day that Cash performed at Leavenworth! Now given all this info would you consider this a genuine item? What would you think this is worth? Do you think the value would be more because of where it was written? And do you think it would be worth the time and trouble to have it authenticated and if so would it be more valuable ? Thanks for listening to my story!

    Hi,

judging from the scans of from the signature alone you most likely have an authentic vintage Johhny Cash "cut" or "signature" - the basic form collected. Not as valuable as a signed photo. However, with the date (iwritten in another hand) and the clipping and whatever else you have - to a Cash collectors this could be a very desirable item from such a famous appearance. Signatures of Cash are generally are valued at perhaps $50 to $70 - with this story and date it is difficult to gauge. It is good that is signed in ink; normally lined paper and the quick in-person nature of your signature can affect value to some - but this is an unusual item so those things are not likely to weigh in as much. And it is quite vintage - also good. Much better than a more recent signature. So, yes - the date and venue should add to the desirability and thus value. It may be 2 or 3 times the normal value - very hard to say. He did dign a lot - how many of these there are though I do not know. Authentication is something that you may decide to do - I don't foresee any good autograph collector having trouble seeing what this is - I never sumbit anything and do not rely on third part authentication. Others do- and if they are your buyers they will feel much better with a PSA/DNA paper. Signatures with PSA papers generally sell for more. It may well be worth it. The newspaper clipping should be placed in an poly pro bag with an acid free backing board. The signature should be stored apart in its own polypro/acid free backing board, because newsprint is rich in sulphur and will embrittle the signature slip, and discolor it as well.

Your reply is the most intelligent and helpful I have recieved on the item yet as I have posted inquiries on a few other sites without much luck. I contacted PSA and intend to have this item authenticated and graded as I may sell the item at a later date(my son is having too good a time showing it to his friends) and want to assure it value. My biggest problem is how to assemble the other items that give it provenance into a viewable package. Are there any Hardcover "books" that contain the protective materials that you mentioned? In the binder now are of course the newsclippings as well a original birth certificate from the '40's and other documents pertaining to Mr. Blacks incarceration's and some other papers as well.
I must say that even though I have a few auto's from sports fiqures there is something about this one that really intriques me.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi,
My pleasure - thanks image You might , if you wish to keep ALL of the stuff together, consider buying an archival binder - use archival pages in it (Polypro). It is always good to have an autograph with a story - while it may only be necessary to keep a few items with the signature, and obviously PSA/DNA will have no need for them during the authentication process. Whatever /however you store this stuff - do not frame (at least keep out of light and use UV glass, and NO adhesives on the signature - archival and reversible ONLY - scotch tape would destroy it. I reallty don't doubt the authenticity of the item, but would liek to find out what its value is should you sell it.
