Julio Franco Wants to Play Till 50

June 27, 2005 8:19 p.m.

Julio Franco says he wants to play until he is 50. After tonight's pinch hit
grand slam, does anything think that he won't be able to? Baseball-Reference
has his HOF monitor at 126. Greater than 100 makes the player a "likely HOFer."

I am so tempted to say that Franco has virtually no chance at the HOF, but he
currently has 2488 career hits and I'm sure he'll get some credit for doing what
he is doing at almost 47 years old. 3000 is likely out of the question, but 2600?
2700? 2800? Who knows. What do you guys think?

I think you may have misread baseball reference, as I see them with Julio totaling 55 on the HOF Monitor (likely HOFer > 100) and 42.2 on HOF Standards (average HOFer 50).

Me and Julio down by the ballyard

His is a great story, but it will NOT result in more than a token handful of HOF votes.

I would also say no hall for Julio. Just a good player not H.O.F. material.

Had Franco managed to stay in MLB during the four years he missed ('98-'01), he likely would have made the 3000 milestone. He needs to drift over to the AL and rack up some DH ABs.

Minoso would be a fair comparison, and i dont think he will ever get in the hall

Its funny you mentioned Minoso. I also first thought of Minoso when reading this thread. But his stats show the following:

After age 40 he only had about 350 AB.

His Major league career didn't really start until he was almost 29 (1951), probably because he was black (although from Cuba) He packed in a lot of stats between the age of 29 and 38..............very few stats after age 40.

Its funny that Julio is getting close to the league minimum, but produces more than many of the multi-millionaires on the field.
