I am sure this had to happen to others too...

So I just got my June CC submission back. I knew what the grades were last week, so I was excited to get my cards back.

That was, of course, right up until I opened the box and looked at my cards...

One of my cards was damaged. I know the condition it was in when it left, and now I know the condition it is in. On the reverse, a corner has been lifted. While some may say that it happened when I put it in the sleeve, and just didn't notice it, this is an upper corner (upper left to be exact), and I cut all my sleeves down the seam a touch, as to slide the cards in nice and easy.

This card is a 1992 Topps Stadium Club #683 Brett Favre. It was originally in a GAI 9.5 holder. We all know how well that would have crossed in the holder... I cracked it out to send to PSA, in the hopes of getting a 10, and putting it on my wall with the other Favre cards I have. I never had intentions of selling it to make a quick buck. I paid a good amount of money to start with for this GAI 9.5. Now, I can't do anything with it, as cracking it out again would drop it lower than what it is right now (PSA 9).

I was wondering if this has happened to anyone before, and what sort of compensation, if any, PSA is willing to give. I would guess that they would deny everything, and I am left up a smelly, brown river without a paddle.

Any thoughts or experiences anyone can give? Any advice that would help me out?

Thanks to everyone who replies!

IMS,, Did you scan the card before you sent it in? This happened to me once with Beckett. I sent a foil Shaq card in and it actually graded at a bgs 9.5. When I got it back the bottom edge of the card was peeled up. It happened after the card was graded, so the installer must have snagged it on the plastic sleeve they use on all their cards. Needless to say they still sent it to me hoping I would not notice. Anyway I sent it back along with the scan I took before I sent it to them the first time. They gave me full value for the card.

  • I don't have a scan, and I know that it is going to bit me in the butt when it is all said and done. I don't even have a scan of it in the GAI 9.5 holder, although I do still have the GAI 9.5 flip.

    An awful situation, I know.

I am not upset about the money side of it. I have lost more money on less of cards before. I just wouldn't want this negligence to happen to me, or anyone else, if it can be avoided. You entrust your cards to the professionals, with the hope that this never occurs, but undoubtedly it has to at some point. It just so happens that it happened to me on this particular card at this particular point in time...

I've had this happen many, many times-- most recently with a 1973 OPC Montreal Canadians team card and a 1972 Rene Robert RC. Both were blazers when they left the house, and both came back with bent corners in 7 holders.

I know the feeling. I just could not believe that "professionals" could do something like this. Sadly its the $6.00 per hour guy that just does the card slabbing that most likely did it to your card. Thats why I scan all my cards before they are sent in. Its like Insurance thats basically free. I know its a hard lesson but make sure you do it from now on.

Happened to me once before on almost 30 cards (bulk order).
All the cards were 9s and 10 grades. All the cards had the upper
right corner bent forward. Some had the bent; others with a chip
during the bent. Sent them back and explained my theory on what
could of happened, since no way those were the proper grades given
and of course not what I sent in as well. I was told that all the bents
looked like it was caused during the encapsulation process. PSA bought
them all back and I requested it in grading credit. Took a month total, but
    it worked out.

I can understand to scan cards if it was a small order of maybe 20 or less
cards and also depending on value especially if it's something rare, but I cant
see anyone scanning every single card (I guess you can...but) especially if it's
    a monster order.

    Sux about your Favre.

  • Thanks for the reply EEK! Maybe there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel for me.

I guess all I can hope for is that PSA will do "the right thing", even though I have no hard evidence (other than a GAI 9.5 flip, which I assume they would balk at) to back up my claim.

All in all, I am just disappointed. I am sure bad things happen sometimes. This does not mean that I am going to stop sending cards to PSA.

    Thanks again.
