Would like to hear your opinions on what their rational might be for not letting everyone see the composition of their set.

Why should the Set Registry owner of the #1 overall 1951 Bowman (for example) let the world know which EXACTLY cards he needs to upgrade to keep his lead over #2? That'll only tip his hand and open himself up to a potential bidding war before it even starts, or even worst, be the victim of shill bidding by those who know he wants a particular card.

Yeah, because Heaven knows that everyone who is in the top 5 in each of the major sets gets all of their cards from ebay. Maybe DBH is right, but if the above is the reason why people don't list their sets, then that's just sad. That's a complete contradiction to the good old "wantlists" that drive our hobby. You can only be so paranoid in this world. At some point, you just have to believe that the whole world is not out to get you. I gotta think that the top set registrants have better things to do than worry about what cards their "competition" needs to improve their rating. Personally, I don't understand why people don't list their set breakdown.
Sure, there maybe someone there with a card that can possibly upgrade his set, but do you think the person would offer it at a discount?

Again, maybe it's because my whole reason for collecting is to finish a set, and not to be #1, but I would absolutely offer any "duplicates" that I have to a fellow collector of the same set if that collector needed them. My preference would be to trade for cards of equal value. Why do you think some of our fellow board members have links to their sets as their signature? Um, I'm guessing it's so others can help them out.
Personally, I sold one of my near sets through one of Leland's auctions, and obviously having each card/grade listed was a big help in selling the set.
And perhaps those aren't good enough reasons. I will say this. In the past I have killed some time by looking at some of the top sets. Wow, Marshall Fogel has a complete 1952 set with a rating of 8.26. I wonder how many 9's he has? I wonder if he has any 10's. What's his lowest grade? What's his Mantle grade? A PSA 10? Wow, he even has a picture. Sweet. You know what Charles Merkel and Don Louchios, good for you that you're ahead of Marshall, but in general, the heck with you. I get to enjoy Marshall's collection. What's in it for Marshall? Nothing really. Except a little pride and the knowledge that he's sharing his passion.
It's like having a classic car show with all of the cars hidden away and judged secretly. I can't show everyone my car, because then the next person will go out and get what I have or even something better. Oh, the horror!
It's like I tell my 6-year old son nearly every day: "It's not always about what's in it for me."

Sorry, but I just found your last sentence ironic.
Anyway, as we all know, the Set Registry is EXTREMELY competitive. For owners of sets who are in competition with other collectors to reveal their hand just doesn't make much sense. There ARE unscrupulous sellers out there who WILL take advantage of such information to drive up the price on their own auctions through shill bidding if they know a big time collector with deep pockets needs a card they have.

Sorry Hurt, but I must disagree. The Set Registry is not always EXTREMELY competitive. ( I am sure there are some that are) The 72 Topps registry is filled with fine members who go out of their way to help each other........Maybe I am lucky to be in this partucular set.
