1923 Peace Dollar - Unlisted Variety ??

Hello ...

Any significance to the multiple clashed marks for the below 1923 Peace Dollar?

The first picture shows clashed marks in front of the forehead (some incused). The second picture shows incused clashed marks on the back of neck.

Among other clashed marks, the coin's reverse side has three prominent markings on the right side: raised vertical line above LA in DOLLAR, raised horizontal line extending form the branches below DOLLAR, and specifically the two raised horizontal lines above DO in DOLLAR.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

  • Sorry, those are common clash marks. I submitted a similar 1923-P coin to Leroy about a month ago and his reply was "Only list die clash spikes above eagle's rt shoulder that are unusually long up to N or double ones & clashed letter E above top left of eagle's left shoulder".

Dang it. I always ask questions around here and thought I could finally answer one. I don't type fast enough.

I also sent an almost identical 23-P to Leroy at the end of April. He did say... "I've only seen a couple clashed Peace $ with clashed line near TRVST.". He noticed die file lines above the eagle's left wing and right shoulder. He gave me a new VAM number of 1AH and mentioned it was different than the existing 1AF.

Thanks for your response. Any significance on the below clashed die?

  • Like VAMs4U2BuyHere said... the spike has to go into the N or be doubled. Single ones don't get a unique VAM assignment. Can't tell where your spike ends in the photo.

Here's the photo that Leroy took of my 23-P 1AH. Your clash marks look like they are in the exact same place. Maybe you can compare the polishing lines if you want to attribute the one you have.

Hard to tell from the photo, but it might be VAM 2AG.

    Thanks for the info.

Yes, the 1923-P coin has the same exact polishing lines. Didn't know there was a 1923-P 1AH - can't locate any listings for such a coin ??
