Need Expert Advice on CAM designations

I just received 3 coins back from PCGS that did not grade CAM (2 were DCAM in PCI holders). From everything I've read and seen (admittedly, it's not much) I still can't figure out why they did not get a CAM designation.

I'm looking for a resident expert (Russ?) to whom I can send these to look at and give me their opinion as to why they graded as they did.

Thanks.

You can send them to MadMarty, but he'll just crack 'em, fix 'em up, get a 2 pt bump and a cameo designation and then sell 'em. image

Do you have any pictures?? PCI has been known for giving away dcam designations to coins that are really nothing more than brilliant- there probably isn't enough contrast between devices and fields, and probably not enough device frost. I gave up trying to score nice cam franklins in third world holders- not worth the hassle. Anacs, pcgs, ngc, and icg are still worth (for me) taking a closer look..... image

Probably because PCGS' modern grading is pretty tight right now, just ask Russ.

1). As mentioned tight grading now at PCGS especially on CAM/DCAM

2). I have picked up some PCI "CAM" coins, where only the obverse was cam. Some the REV isn't even close.

The ones that look cam on both will go to PCGS once the "All CLEAR" signal is given by Russ/ Martyimage

  • Also, did you crack em out or send for crossover?

The fact is that a good percentage of the cameos already in PCGS holders would not re-grade cameo in the current grading environment if they were cracked out and sent in raw.

That one was just graded, and did not make cameo. I've seen plenty that were graded in the past that were not as strong.

  • OK well if that didn't make Cameo then I have no further questions!

    Thanks.

I thought that DH had squelched those rumors that pcgs had tightened up?? image

Not at all. In fact it may be getting even worse! (The Cam/nonCam thingie). I just got two 1960 Frankies back sans CAM that would have been CAM nine months ago.
