1934 S Peace dollar..... What would it grade?

ttownttown Posts: 4,472 ✭✭✭
This looks like a nice coin but appears to have a light scratch. How would this affect the grade?

  • Hard to tell from the poor pictures. Coin could have been cleaned which is why it's not slabbed. I've seen better on Ebay for a little bit more and professionally graded.

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

Buying.....I'd look at it hard for XF money if it hadn't been cleaned.

Selling.... I'd hope for AU also but would probably go with whatever ANACS called in.
  • I never buy raw dollars on ebay because they often cleaned and won't grade. No as an EF details coin, the scratch is fine.

That could very well have been cleaned - stay away from raw stuff on Ebay unless you're absolutely certain of who the seller is.
  • That coin is harshly cleaned -- I would stay away.

I was thinking it was VF and cleaned too. Avoid it. There should be more definition in the feathers of the back and wing area of the Eagle for it to be an AU. From the picture, it seems there isn`t much if any.

    Thanks Guys,

I was thinking it was an XF with a slight staple scrach. Boy I still have a hard time telling dipped coins from pictures. Oh well I'll just keep looking. I'm needing at least a white XF 34s for my Dansco. I guess I'll have to find a PCI or NTC graded low BU to achieve that. I have a XF 34S in my AU/BU album but it's a little grimmy and looks mismatched with this set. If you see anything that can help me give me a PM.image

  • I would say XF detail, Cleaned.
  • image Are you sure its really an "S" mintmark? Looks kinda like a "D" in the picture of the ad.

Note the difference between dipping and abrasive cleaning.

Dipping is a chemical treatment and while too much of it strips luster & leaves a coin looking flat and dead, done right is is widely acceptable. A great many of the white mint state coins in PCGS holders have been dipped at least once. In the eyes of most, a little dip is no big deal.

Abrasive cleaning ("cleaning") is a physical treatment which moves metal and leaves hairlines and an irrecoverably damaged surface in its wake. It is basically never OK. This is what has happened to many (most? could well be...) raw key & semi-key coins offered on ebay. If they could get in a holder, they'd probably be there already.
