sportfest chicago report...

Went to the sportsfest show today and it was probably one of the weaker shows I've been to in chicago. It was about 3/4 full and I think many people made the call to get a national table instead of doing 2 major shows in 4 weeks at the same place.
As for my 38 goudey hunt, it was almost a complete wash. I picked up one of the nicest raw ones I have ever seen. Seems to be either a very high grade 7, with a shot at getting my first 8. This guy was a little dealer and only had a limited selection of very nice raw cards. I also picked up a couple 36 goudeys at decent prices that hopefully come back at 5s. Esp the Crosetti, which sells for crazy multiples of SMR on ebay. A friend I went with traded with Levi and his business partner and got a fair deal. upgraded a couple HOF 34 goudeys up to 5s, and picked up 2 more that were missing which leaves him with only 2 commons for a complete set at 4-5-6 minus the big boys. He also got a couple from shoeless joes.
Its funny how we tend to pisss and moan about dealers charging waay over book, but in the end your simply going to have to deal with them beause the selection is there. we also ran into a younger guy (early 30s?) that was about 50% complete on a PSA 3-4-5 1933 goudey set. slowly picking away at it.
SGC had a booth there but it was empty and they were not grading cards.
GAI was there and the presses were cranking them out. funny thing I noticed was that wvshoebox cards had catalogs all over the GAI table. hmmm...
This topic came up before, and i'm still going to have to disagree with the masses that a small percentage of pre-war is already graded. Out of maybe 150 raw 34 goudeys we looked through, I would say MAYBE 5-7 may get a 5. The rest were essentially filler grade. If I took out 707, there was probably only 8 or so 38 goudeys in any form in the whole place. there were more 36 Goudeys, but they were mostly all dogs.
the hunt continues... bring on the nationals baby!!!!

O-Yea, the autograph hounds were in full force. Ernie banks was there, and my friend got a santo auto for $29. Seems like a pretty nice guy.

o-yea part 2:
stone,
there was a guy there that had a stack of maybe 8-10 of the cabinets you love so much. the top one looked to be in the 5 range even. I didn't ask the price or handle them since I have NO idea what the market is on those. It was the most i've ever seen of those together though. anyway...
Thanx for thinking about me!
Good luck on the submission. I was all hooked up to go to the national this year when I had to have a "tune-up" that won't allow me to travel for a while. Very disappointing.
I hope you do better at the National - I'm going to increase my hunt this fall for T3's - I have 3 BB and 2 boxing to submit to PSA.
BTW, on the scarcity of 38s, if you collected 92UD like I do, that wouldn't be a problem!
