What's the rule for Morgan VAMs that are clashed?

I know there are specific rules for having a unique VAM number assigned.... feature visible by the naked eye, die breaks instead of die cracks, etc. I remember reading something specific about Peace dollar VAMs that are clashed. A letter had to be transferred, or the clash can involve a spike off the eagle's right shoulder but it has to go into the N, or there are multiple spikes. Not sure if I have that exactly right.

What's the rule for clashing on Morgans? Does a letter have to be transferred.... like near Liberty's neck, near the hairvee, under the eagle's tail, or the designer's initial over IN GOD WE TRUST? Did I get it right or is there more?

I'm asking because I've heard of Morgan dies that are clashed multiple times. I remember one guy saying he had a Morgan that had been clashed seven distinct times. Does it matter? I have a 21-P that's been clashed three times. I know clashing is commmon. Just trying to understand the specific guidelines.

I don't really know if there are any rules or not but here is a good site that has pictures of lots of them Vam Update Site . I think I have one of these VAM 5A Link
  • The rule for clashed die Morgan dollars is that there must be a letter transfer from obverse to reverse, or reverse to obverse. Typically it's going to be the n & st, from In God We Trust, clashed into liberty's neck & lower hair vee respectively. More rare is the designers initials visible over the reverse motto or E from LIBERTY visible below the eagle's tail feathers. The exception to this rule is the 1886-P VAM 1C which has the 3+2 clashed reverse with the rotated die. I have two of them listed in my eBay store for those who would like to see pics. I have about 2 dozen clashed die coins currently listed with very detailed photographs. I welcome those interested in the clashed die varieties to view them.

I was credited with discovery on my first clashed die Morgan just a few days ago, 1882-O VAM 23A. I also have it listed in my eBay store for those VAMmers who would like to see the description & photos.
Before anybody asks, no, I don't expect to sell it for $2,000, but that's the price that will allow me to sleep comfortably at night if it should happen to find a new home. image

Nesvt, you seem to have a very good understanding of the requirements for the Peace & Morgan clashed dies. I currently have a double clash spike discovery coin, 1922-P VAM 2AQ, and a tripled spike clash discovery coin, 1922-P VAM 2AP also listed with detailed photos for those interested seeing the new die varieties.

I think I have another 17-18 discovery coins sitting around here that still need to be slabbed before I list them in my store. A few will be going to ICG next week, a few to ANACS this weekend at the Clearwater show, and I may send SEGS a few.

Edited to add: There are also clashed G coins due to rotated dies, mostly in the 1904 or 1902 series. I have a bunch of those also listed.
  • Thanks for clearing that up. Always have a hard time seeing partial N's near Liberty's neck. I think I miss it most of the time.

I checked out a few of your photos. Nice close-ups. The 22-P 2AP with the triple clash is pretty cool. I've got a 22-S with a triple spike clash I need to check into sometime. The spikes are separated a little further from eachother.
