1970 Basketball- Has the Market Tanked?

I was just looking at some recently completed auction prices for 1970 bball, and wow-- has this stuff really dropped in price. Commons going for nine bucks? That's got to be the steal of the century.

Vintage basketball is weak right now. I don't know if it is the economy or just collector's taste changing, but basketball has been a tough sell. I've been buying PSA 8 and higher of key vintage rookies for 30-50% SMR. The only ones that approach book are Wilt and Bill Russell. Even Jabbar is slow right now.

    Savvy purchasing, ndleo.

I may follow your lead. Sorry, but well centered 1970 commons in gradeable condition don't grow on trees. I know there's still a fair amount of vending out there, but even still-- at eight bucks a crack I may have to get involved.

I picked up a PSA 9 from the set for $22 two weeks ago. It's the highest pop card in the set, but even with that I couldn't pass it up.

  • Well I'm working on a Bucks team set 1969-81 so I'm looking for all graded stuff from those years.Maybe I picked a good time to do it!

I'd go for it, Brian. I know the old saying, 'dont' try to catch a falling knife', so maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to wait a couple months and see if the market tanks further. But overall I just can't imagine BaskBall will drop any farther, if what ndleo is saying is true.

  • I will pick up what I can. It's going to be a long process so I'm sure I will be able to see what the market does over the next few months.
If anybody has any Bucks cards from 1969-81 drop me a line.Looking for 8's or better.
    Thanks
  • The eBay prices have gotten so good... I am starting over again with my Knicks collection... This time I am paying about 30%-50% of what I used to pay for 8's! and about 40-70% of what I used to pay for 9's...
  • I don't know if basketball will return to previous levels. There isnt a strong history to the game as there is in baseball, or even football.
Players come and go so quickly, rise and fall so fast (Shawn Kemp, Penny Hardaway) and sometimes rise again (Vince Carter, Grant Hilll)

Can the causal fan tell you about Tim Hardaway? Drazen Petrovich?

I just don't see the allure of basketball history drawing the young basketball fans backward, rather than forward.
It is too bad, because basketball has the best potential to draw the young kids away from Poke-Yugi-Z.

    I could be wrong though.
