What's the eye-glass thing called and other questions

Some of you card-grading gurus have talked about the jeweler's eye-glass piece before. How does it work? Is there a measuring guide when you are looking through it to help you measure relative distances??

How can I get one and how much should I expect to pay??

I've got to get serious about figuring out which of my raw '62Topps cards are "worthy" for submission.

Thanks!

  • I sure ain't a guru, but I use a small, 8x folding loupe I bought off eBay. And to measure centering, I do that on my computer with a large scan of the card and use JRULER

They're called loupes, and 8 to 10x is good for examining cards. Some do have little line rules visible on one or more side, though I don't think they are precise measurements in the cheaper ones. You can find good loupes on eBay.

they are talking about a 10x loupe

    it does not do centering

it is for corners and edges

i have one and I hate it

id rather look at a card with a 3x magnifying glass

    hope i helped you

A LOUPE!! That's what it was called! Thanks to you both.

I tried connecting to the JRULE link, but it wasn't working in my browser. I'll try that later when I come back from listening to some live music.

    It's Friday night! Let's party!

    steve,

Thanks for your input. I appreciate your comments!

I'll do some talking with a jeweler in downtown Portland that I know. He'll most likely let me try his out...

Hoofer - nobody mentioned $$$ - I paid 12 bucks for my 10X loupe at a war surplus store.

    Mark,

    A...war...surplus...store?!!

Ha! That's one of the LAST places I would've expected to find a loupe!!

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check my local Goodwill Store!

I'd suggest investing in one with nice optics and lighted is handy too.

You'd be amazed how much more you can see with it...how much worse your cards look image

But it's great for giving an accurate idea of what your cards will grade.

    pandrews,

I've been outed! I was wondering how long it would take...

Now where is that Exit 340??? I'm taking it!!

    Ax,

Thanks! A light always makes things easier. I'd spring for one of those if it isn't cost prohibitive. I've got to budget my $$$s for PSA subs!

    WinPitcher,

Is your loupe lighted?? Wanna sell it?!

I think Marz on this board still has some lighted loupes for sale- he also has handheld blacklights, for detecting recoloring and alterations. PM him.

I'm so slow on the uptake anymore, I never would have gotten it. I just figured you were a Broncos fan.

Are all the loupes things you put right in front of your eye? From what I read here, it seems like some guys have loupes that are set down over the card instead. That would be a lot easier to handle.
