Moderately priced ancients..

Looking to pick up a few ancients over the next little while. Nothing fancy, say under $50. What are some nice (decent strike, interesting topic etc.) ancient coins that can be gotten cheaply?. Metal does not matter. I know gold is out for $50. I just want a few to have and hold and generally appreciate. This is an area I've never explored, but want to see if it is something that would be interesting to me. I also like history so that is an added bonus. Any input is much appreciated. Thanks --Kurt

  • There's PLENTY of decent circulated ancients you can pick up for $50 and under, and that would include Greek bronzes going back to the 4th Century BC. I'll put in a word for Roman Republic silver denarii-- they're silver, have interesting classic designs, and all are over 2,000 years old. Most you'll purchase could reasonably be expected to have still been in circulation during the time of Julius Caesar.
  • In ancients I prefer to collect the history first and the coin second.
