I'm about to make an offer on a Proof IHC but need help before I pull the trigger

I am getting into something I know little about, IHCs. I was offered a very fair price on one in proof condition but I don't know how to tell of the authenticity of the coin. What are the signs to look for to tell whether it is counterfeit or a MS that has been turned into a proof? The IHC is an 1880 is their any tell-tale signs for this year as to it being fake?

If you can't tell a proof from a proof like IHC I would suggest you buy a certified coin. The strike is usually excellent on proof coins. Most proofs would already be certified unless they have a problem.

I wouldn't touch it......you don't know enough to buy a raw coin..........just say no!!!

Raw is risky, many of these are AT or recolored. On the plus side many earlier (pre-1900) indian cents are worth more as UNCs than Proofs. 1880 is early enough where it might fall into that category.
