Hard Lesson Learned

Received my grades from PCGS (in only 6 days for my 8 free submissions which I thought was a nice surprise - not!). Nothing graded as expected. All bought off of Ebay in holders from the inferior grading companies.

I bought most of these coins before I started frequenting this forum, so I really learned my lesson BEFORE I received these grades. Doesn't make me feel much better but I'm using a totally different strategy now thanks to this forum.

No matter what Laura thinks, there's a tremendous amount of expert advice here.

Thanks again.

Rob

Six days on a freebie submission? Cool!

Sorry they didn't grade like you wanted, but we've all been there.

I think it could have been a whole lot worse than it turned out -

So if this was the cost of a valuable lesson learned, you got off far cheaper than a lot of other people.
  • WOW. Quick turnaround on the 8 freebies. I think I'll send mine in too if they're moving that fast.

BTW - Did you submit them raw or in the slabs?

I cracked them all out; almost lost an eye and a finger but I finally go them out of them durn holders!

I guess I can't complain too much; but the drop in grades on a few of them translates into a significant drop in price ($500 to $5).
  • Everyone's been there, including myself. Look over the coins when they get back and figure out why they graded what they did.
  • Not a total disaster. The 35-S is worth $200. What did you pay for the 28-P's??

  • << <i>Not a total disaster. The 35-S is worth $200. What did you pay for the 28-S's?? >>

    I paid $250 for the 28-S, $600 for the 28 that graded 62 and $795 for the 28 that graded 63.

Well, could have been worse. Hopefully you will have more successes like the 35-S to make up for it.

    Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."

One other thing -- this solidifies the 2 point overgrading rule of thumb for third world slabs!! And, of course, CAM/DCAM in a third world holder means No-CAM at PCGS!!

795 isnt bad to pay for a nice 63 28P

I just had delusions on some of these coins; the ones that really bother me are the PCI and NTC coins that graded down 2 with no CAM or DCAM designation. Oh well, it could have been worse, and this forum saved me from buying a lot more coins like these.

    Thanks.

I needed an 8mm projector to convert some old home movies so I joined eBay and bought one.

Then I looked around to see if there was anything else I could buy and saw they had coins.

I'd been away from collecting for about 15 years and got out my 1986 Redbook as a price reference.

Slabbing had just started when I left, but I remembered there were good slabs and overgraded slabs, but I couldn't remember which were good.

I had some ACG slabs so I bid on a bunch of ACG coin auctions (from centsless). I paid $650 for about $5,000 worth of coins and when they arrived, I took them down to a local shop to cash in on my new found fortune.

The dealer offered me $80 for the lot and said "Don't buy this crap, stick with NGC and PCGS."

Having remembered how the shop I went to years ago, the guy would always lowball me when buying (plus he'd drop a grade from when he sold me the coin) so I figured the new guy was just trying to rip me off.

So I went to shop across town to find their "real" worth, and he offered me $75 and also said "Don't buy that crap".

Fortunately, centsless did take the coins back and gave me a full refund.image
