1907/09 Ty Cobb (RC) W555 (only 5 graded) !!

hi all
this is a very rare graded Ty Cobb RC.
Only 5 of these have been graded, 4 by SGC and only 1 by PSA.
They are handcut from candy boxes (best hobby guess) though no one knows what candybox.
Very little is known about this issue.

still deciding on if i`ll do a crossover.

  • wow. did you bring this guy up at net54? i think the recognized cobb rookie is his t206's.

Yes, but check the thread "cobbs rookie cards" by jay miller.

Hal lewis names about 10 cards in the 1909 yr. that could be considered ty`s RC.

The W555 is included in that list.

(his list excludes postcards & cabinet cards)

personally, with Hals knowledge & collection, i`m not going to argue with him image

  • I dont know if I would cross it over. SGC will let some things slide and pull the grade down a bit if things arent cut on or outside the lines. PSA might reject it because of the upper right corner or you can just have them slab it authentic...

Nothing wrong with an early tobacco SGC graded card. That's their specialty, esp. going back into the 19th century tobacco issues.

    Hi Lee
Interesting card...I've never seen than one before - I have seen the 1926 Schapira Bros. "Big Show Candy" Ty Cobb - this one is very nice.

    Congratulations! Why cross-over?

I personally dont think this "card" its as rare as the pop would suggest, there are a few more out there.

I also see why some people would rather have the t-206 as Cobb's simply cause this cut out its not that nice especially in comparison.

BTW has anyone ever seen a 1910 Punch Ty Cobb, i have heard that one exist but i have never seen it. I have seen other cards from this early cuban set and they look phenomenal, with beautiful borders and actual photo stock.

  • callecho...agreed. I've been hunting for a nice crease free low grade version of the the cobb red portrait for months. but, i guess people get a kick out of getting the first ever issued card of a player (i get a kick out of it myself). The ruth rookie is an example...really not a great looking card in my opinion, but is one, if not THE, most highly sought after rookie card in the hobby. i would rather have the goudeys...the fro joys...even the leaf card (produced after he retired) in terms of aesthetic value.

first off, i never said this was the only one ever seen. But you yourself say theat there are a "few more out there"

If you compare that to the amount of Cobb T206 & T205`s out there, ( hundreds ?? )

popularity breeds conformity. A Cobb t206 or t205 can found on ebay any day of the week, all year long !!

This "card" is unique and obscure. Its a 1909 and its a Cobb. That all sounds sweet to me !!

btw - its always nice to to get a snobby reply, a showoff scan, and then hijack the thread with your own questions about a different subject !! ALL IN ONE POST !! thanks old friend

Is that the HOF registry type set? I don't do the reg. thing. I do like the idea of theme sets. My favorite is the Pepe Frias - oh, sorry for the OT.

  • Speeder,

did you just win that card. I saw it on Ebay( or 1 like it) about a month ago. If you did I think you got a good deal on it.
  • eddo33,

I got this from an ebay store.

but i did win an auction for a W555 John McGraw about a week ago.

    thanks, lee

    Speeder,

Your card is amazing and its pretty rare regardless of the POP numbers.

t-206 Cobbs can be found quite often, but i just think its a nicer looking card, thats all.

I really didnt mean to offend you or come off snotty.

Btw i dont own that card , i just lifted the scan from the PSA library.
