PCI gold label?

I'm looking at some nickels on ebay but don't know if I should buy them. Is the PCI gold label grading bad?
Thanks Jim

Be very suspect of PCI gold slabs, treat them like raw coins.

Some would say so yes. Using the search function on will yeild many, many threads on grading companies and members thoughts on who is best and PCI specifically. (PCI is usually not on most members lists as the 'best').

The only reason any seller submits to them is to get three to four point overgrades, cameo and deep cameo designations on coins that don't deserve it, and to get problem coins that would be bodybagged at a reputable service in to a holder.

    They are equally as bad.

Lets maybe cut to the chase here. Stick to PCGS, NGC, or ANACS if possible (ANACS holders problems coins and labels them as such), treat all others as raw.

    Usually.

Close, but not quite, I'd say.

Segs isn't as bad as PCI, but they have holdered a lot of problem and overgraded coins.

Same story. Maybe slightly above PCI gold in my book, but still a third-tier service.

PCI gold slabs can be properly graded. Buy the coin not the slab as the saying goes. Don't listen to the bias, although it may be justified some of the time especially with modern cameo or so called cameo coins. I have found PCI gold labels to be sometimes accurate with classic coins especially Morgans in grades of 63-64. Again, buy the coin and not the slab. Chris

It seems that most people agree that PCI overgrades by a few points on MS coins. What about coins graded VF-EF or even AU? I was also looking at a PCI slab and it was graded EF-45 I believe.

True, and a blind squirrel can find a nut too! As the value of a coin rises, the greater the chance that PCI/NTC/ACG/NNC will overgrade or slab a problem coin without saying there is a problem. Be very wary of buying coins in a non-PCGS/NGC/ANACS holder unless you are VERY comfortable grading coins and detecting problems.

I think it's sage advice that one should stick to anacs, pcgs, and ngc coins while one is learning to grade and spot problem coins- especially when one is buying coins online with only a picture for reference.....
