Dealer to sell 17 1893-s Morgan $

This weeks topic in the newly released CDN mentions that a dealer from the Ny area is selling off his PCGS grading set of 17 1893-s Morgan $ in grades Ag-3 thru Au-58 in an upcoming auction. I thought this was intresting for a few reasons, 1) there has been recent discussion about how much should a dealer pay for middle grades, 2) Buying the coin vs buying the holder and 3) reports of several 1893-s hoards coming out.

In summary it will be intresting to see what the auction prices realized for these coins will be compared to the quality of the coins which I am sure are nice? . Will the auction prices realized gradually step up from grade to grade as you continue up the grading scale, or will say a vf-25 sell for higher than a vf-35 becuase its nicer? Will the plastic grade make a difference or will quality play a bigger role
Will this public offering cause any fluctuations in the values of 1893's Morgan good or negative??

I spose that is possible and quite likely if the difference is there. If one peruses the Heritage "Archives" there is often guite a disparity in sale prices for the same grades over several months' time. Reasons could be which TPG holder the coin is in, eye appeal/quality and just plain ol timing or the supply at the time of sale. I would expect it might be more a matter of the 35 not being quite up to snuff as opposed to the 25 being a killer for the grade.

here is a recent example that brought a pretty good price for the grade.

Your link shows a very nice coin for a VF30!
    When in doubt, don't.

I presume this is the same dealer with a massive list of 93S Morgans as well as 1889CC's in the current CoinWorld??

I remember how Miller's mint sold there hoard of 1895 proofs and the market didn't skip a beat,it'll probably be the same way...
  • I would like to see the coins to see how the combination of eye appeal and technical grade affect the selling prices.

    Tom,

I had to run earlier, but that auction that had the 93-s in 30 for strong money, did look exceptionally nice for the grade>

    re:
No, its not the same dealer that had the coin world add. This is a dealer named Dan Davis from Ny, actually seems like a real nice guy as I have talked with him on the phone before about 32-d quarters.

It will beintresting to see the grades and quality of the coins as you step up the scale, then what they actually bring.

I was chatting with one of the bidders before it ended and it was my opinion that smoeone thought the coin will upgrade thus the strong money.

  • Seems to be alot of "key date" material, especially Morgans, on the market right now. I personally think they have appreciated beyond reality, but that is just my opinion.

Well higher prices bring out the better stuff to be snapped up by both the collectors and the speculator/dealers

Does any body know what the prices realized were? I wanted to watch them, but I was so sleepy being on the east coast.

I still have an exceptional 1893-s in an ANACSVF35 for less than 6800 plus 15%. Totally original. I know, wrong forum... but if it helps someone.
