UK 1992 Proof/mint sets, any one got one?

I'm currently conducting a bit of research here on 1992 10 pence pieces.

So if anyone has a set knocking about i'd be most appreciative if you could confirm this to be true;

With regards to the small 10p piece in the set "The L and I in Elizabeth point at dots, the 1 in the 10 on the reverse points between the dots".

I looked at one today and found that to be the case but i was wondering if it was the same for all the sets?

  • For what its worth, on the circulated piece I have I find the opposite to be true.

    That's just the tip of the iceberg. There are 6 varieties;

    Type 1; Wired edge; Obv at dots, reverse between. (Accounts for 30%)
    Type 2; Wired edge; Obv between dots, reverse at. (Accounts for 30%)
    Type 3; Flat Edge; Obv at dots, Rev between. (Accounts for 20%)
    Type 4; Flat Edge; Obv between dots, Rev at. (Accounts for c.18.5%)
    Type 5; Flat Edge; Obv between/Rev between (Accounts for c.1%)
    Type 6; Flat Edge; Obv at/Rev at. (Accounts for c. 0.5%)

    Type 3 is what i believe is in all of the mint sets. The proofs might be type 4.

    The vast majority in circulation are of type 1 and 2 of which there are a few billion of each. Type 3 and 4 are not too far behind. Types 5 and 6 you've got to really look for those.
  • Of the Type 6 variant at most there are 13,000,000 of them in existance which is a heck of alot but if they are all in circulation then UNCs are going to be pretty rare. 13,000,000 is about the 1% range, but since there are quote 'very much less than 1%' in existence then the figure could be down as low as 0.5% of the mintage which would drop that figure to about 6.5 million coins. Which is considerably lower than alot of George V Halfcrowns minted in the 1910s and they exist in UNC.

    Of the Type 6 ten pence pieces in the two or three years i've been actively looking for them i've found six specimens (Possibly seven). I have five of those here with me now, four in a money bag and on VF one in an airtite. Of the sixth one that was pulled from circ and identified as Type 6, but it was a pretty beaten up specimen with verdigris so it got thrown back into circ. If there was a seventh one then that one was given away in a trade to someone in either the US or Finland, but i forget if i sent them one. If i did then i have had seven, if i didn't then i've only had six.
