Are Hawaiian Commemoratives expensive in MS64?

For those of you who are into commemoratives, Do you think that the population of the Hawaiian commemorative in MS64 supports its price of around $3000+?

Is the high price due mainly to the low mintage (~10,000)?

Thanks,

Dan

I'd love to find one in PCGS or NGC MS64 with nice original color toning for around 3k. My guess is... imageimage

I think that if you shop around you can locate a decent MS 64 in a PCGS holder for around $2700 - 2800. Four years ago I paid $2500 retail for one and I don't think they've gone up too much since then.

Check out the prices realized on Heritage...that will give you a current guide line.

Alot of them have a yellow tinge to them, white ones are difficult to locate. Good luck.

It's not just the mintage that makes this coin key, it was also the dispersal of the issue. These made their way everywhere and the few hoards of them that I know of always seem to have that mostly distasteful lemon hue that these are known for. The wide distribution also meant that many folks who were not numismatists ended up with an example and these are generally lost in terms of high grade MS survivorship.

Find a nice, original MS64 and be thankful to pay $3k.

  • This coin has went up a lots in the last few months. 65 is over $6,000.
  • I feel fortunate to half purchased a nice PCGS 63 a few years back for 1600 or so, nice 63's seem to be going for over $2k today. This coin has always been in demand and has held its value relatively well.

Even problem coins bring good money, I've seen a lot of net graded coins in ANACS holders still have eager buyers for them at over $1K each.

You might be able to get a typical MS64 Hawaiian for less than $3000. Most Hawaiians I think are simply not pretty, the toning is usually a negative. I do not remember the last time I saw one in any grade with what I considered nice toning. A blast white MS64 like mine will set you back around $3500.

Yes, I do believe any Hawaiian with nice eye appeal will bring well over sheet prices.

The last Hawaiian I attempted was a 64 (this one). I got totally own3d bidding $3100 -- no idea what the high bidder had in.

These days, I'd happily pay $3500 for a nicely white one -- but I suspect I'll end up paying even more when the time comes image.
  • A while back, I had the opportunity to buy a PCGS 63 on the BST board for about $1500...and I PASSED !!!

Still kicking myself for that one...image
