Here's the auction he is reffering to: 1966 Orr
  • I always wondered why I haven't seen more informative "auctions" like this. Stamp collectors use to regulalry post such auctions, they even posted pics of genuine and counterfit items with close up scans clearly showing the differences between 2 items.

    I applaud efforts like this.

  • Unfortunately, its like raising children. You tell them the same things over and over and they still dont get it. There are a LOT of nice cards out there to pick from. But there are no 3rd party graded Orrs out there (save PSA and SGC), no ungraded Honus Wagner T206's, no 52 Topps ungraded Mantles of any value. Ask questions. Do research. Use common sense. For some strange reason these things get lost when sellers dangle the proverbial "carrot" out there for some over zealous collectors to drool over. Too bad the guy has to take out an auction to tell people what they should already know before they bid....

I do too, but ebay has taken down plenty of these types of auctions in the past, which is probably why you haven't seen them. I give it 48 hours...

I must say, eBay has actually done a heck of a job controlling the 1952 Topps Mantle scams after a year of me running my guide. The scams are few and far between now because the vast majority are shut down quickly, that entire market is nearly dead. Only a few scam auctions ended as scheduled, although, I'm guessing those deals were clobbered before any money transacted because user names were not private, because eBay automatically shuts those down. Pretty amazing actually, considering that not even a year ago these scams were totalling upwards of $50-80K a month on eBay.

If someone, like this guy, keeps up with it on a particular card, such as the Orr rookie, eventually eBay will crack down once they realize what is going on and that welll will run dry for those scammers. I hate theives, especially petty ones.

Have you ever thought of creating/selling a guide for other cards such as the Orr RC?
