Just curious about demographics and how many forumites are youngsters, what got you started collecting coins, why you collect coins and what coins you collect?

Your answers will be an interesting read, particularly for us middle aged and older folks.

Is this a giveaway? If so, I'm under 25.

  • I'm now 26, but I started collecting coins at the age of 24 after finding an 1875 CC seated half in my basement.

I turn 23 next week. Ive only officially been collecting for about 2 months now. I've always been interested in coins and used to collect wheaties when I was a kid. I even had 5 Indian Heads but God knows what happened to them. Right now Im collecting Lincolns and am really enjoying it so far. Everyone here on the forums have been great and have helped a ton in completing my 1909-Present Lincoln set.

No give away, and for those of us over 25, someone will have to start a spearate post. Any volunteers?

Im 16 image I began collecting 5 years ago and here is how. As a little kid, $100 is a lot of money. I knew that I had a $100 savings bond in the safety deposit box. (I had won this in a school read-a-thon). I asked my dad one day to take me to get it and cash it for me. (Little did I know it only had a value of $30 something at the time image Hey, I was 11.) While we were looking for it in the box, we came across a Morgan dollar with a note that said "For Ben from Great Grandma". I thought that was the coolest thing. After all, it was a *big coin from 1921!* So I took the common, raw AU58 1921 Morgan home, and from there, my interests grew. It moved on to "quantity and not quality" where I would go to the coin shop every couple of weeks and buy 10-15 new cents. I was so proud of myself at having 1 from each year for 1900-2000! After that date set, I moved on to nickels. I never quite finished with those because some of them were too expensive as a young kid. Things changed and I started on coins I thought were cool with my best friend. He and I both loved coins and would spend hours looking at them together. We moved apart and I had to rely on eBay to keep my interests growing. On eBay, I learned about PCGS graded coins. After a little investigating, (and a nicely worded item description) I bought my first PCGS coin. A slabbed 2001-D Massachusetts state quarter in MS67. I thought it was a great deal since PCGS price guide said $70 and I BIN'ed for $35. Thankfully, that was my worst mistake. Also, I later sold that quarter for a little more than $35 since the prices rose some image That was about February when I bought that coin. I joined PCGS around then to, and joined the registrys. I caught the registry bug, and started working on a MS67+ SHQ. About April, I realized I wouldn't be able to finish the set because I couldn't devote that much money to them, so I sold most of the collection, and started enjoying coins as a whole. I am still working on a registry set, but decided that my birth year of 1989 would be a lot easier and more reasonable to finish image Now I am where I am today, still working on the 1989 registry.. buying coins that I like. And finding lots of fun in coin collecting. I have changed several times what I own, and am always buying and selling on eBay, but I still own my first coin. The love-filled 1921 Morgan.

Great story p8nt and thank you for telling it. I hope you continue to have lots of fun in the hobby. In my opinion a hobby should be fun and educational at the same time. Further making contacts and developing relationships with other collectors is great. Finally, if you end up making money in the hobby, that is icing on the cake.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my post.

    TTT.

One good response so far from a YN. Any other YN care to contribute?
