New member, an intoduction-

Greetings-

This messageboard was reccommended to me by mudflap02 on the Beckett Message Board in a recent thread about what resources player and set collectors use to find their "white whales".

I collect Dennis Boyd for a couple of reasons.

I started a project of collecting Negro League players autographs TTM. One request that I wrote went to his father who played for the Homestead Grays. He was kind enough to write a letter back about his experiences in the NL and mentioned his son, Oil Can Boyd.

Oil Can Boyd's 1991 UpperDeck card is the first card that I can remember from when I first started collecting mostly because of his name and the goofy looking glasses he is wearing in the photo.

I have always been a player collector and always wanted to have one of every card for that player. My last attempt was Mike Sweeney. I had a huge collection but unfortunately the release of 2004 Diamond Kings was the nail in the coffin for me because of the huge amount of supposed 1/1s.

I am going to Uganda for the month of July on a missions trip. The majority of the money is coming out of my pocket. While gone I will not have any income as I do not have vacation time. I have had a tight budget to get all the money lined up so it made sense to go with a not so famous retired player who played during the years that cards were way over produced. After I looked at the player check list I could tell that I would have a couple of "white whales" to hunt down to keep things fun and interesting. That's what I am down to now.

The number one reason is because it makes me happy.

And there you have it.

Sounds to me like you'll always be a rich man, no matter what Beckett might say.

Welcome to the boards. I have no doubt that you'll find them as welcoming and interesting as I did when I first stumbled in a year ago. I can personally attest to the fact that you will learn *tons* about the current state of the hobby and that you're love of collecting will be rekindled if it ever fades.

Greetings and good luck w/ your "Oil Can" Endeavors. I remember Oil Can for being a wild and emotional player, but other than that I didn't realize anybody collected his cards.

BTW are his cards being printed this year while he is playing w/ a traveling team?

You mentioned mudflap02 and the Beckett Board in one sentence and your first post!

    Not a great start. image

Kidding of course...any friend of mudflap is a sucker waiting to be had by us. image

Welcome! Don't take anything you read here too literally.

I suggest you begin with the "Ebay scam? Reselling PSA 5s as ungraded" thread.

I have tried, unsuccessfully, to see if the team will have a team set issued for sale at their stadium. I have yet to get a call back.

I'd send a letter to the team's public relations representative with a brief description of your collection. You'd be shocked by the stuff you can get sometimes...especially from minor/independent league teams that have the time and desire to cater to individual fans.

Good luck on your endevors. There is a lot that can be learned from the people on these boards and would not have started my 67 set without the help of them.

OilCan.....................Welcome to the BOK ( Board of Knowledge ) ! You will learn alot reading the Present and Past messages posted here ! I know I have ! Have you bought any Psa graded cards , and are you considering starting a Oilcan Boyd Player Set on the Registry, which is free to join ! .................Robbieimage
    Collect 1964 Topps Baseball
    1963 Fleer
    Lou Brock Master Set
  • From what I understand of the registry (very little) the cards must be graded by PSA, is that correct?

EDIT: I attempted to start one but had problems when it came to selecting the set. What do player collectors select for the set if their player is not listed?

OilCan...............To enter cards into the Registry , they must be cards graded by Psa ! To start a OilCan Boyd Set , you must make a request to Psa to put Your Player on the Registry Player List ! This can take alwhile , as there are numerous Player requests waiting on the list for there Player to move up the list ! As far as what cards to list in the set , I believe it can be any card that has been graded by Psa already , and in the future !...................Robbie

  • Welcome to the boards, I too am a player collector for the most Part Wade Boggs and a little Hank Aaron. If you request An Boyd set prepare to wait 6 months or so. To speed up the process if you send a list of the set including card #'s it will speed up the wait. If you decide to go the graded route for part of your collection. GL

That's what I figured. Doubt I'll habe the money to have 106 cards graded anytime soon.

Some things on the checklist I'm not sure PSA will grade are the postcards, Topps Tattoos sheets, the Pannini stickers, 1982 Bpston Herals Stamp and the 1986 Baseball Buttons. If PSA will not grade it, are you still able to list it in the registry?

To submit a request for a new player set on the Registry, you must already have 3 cards graded. The form requires you to enter the certification numbers. Oddly, it took less than a week for my request to get the Mike Bossy player sets up and running, but my recent request to have a card added to the master set has taken 3-4 weeks (and counting).
  • All but the button is gradeable I think. I have had the BOSTON HERALD graded. Although PSA considers it an 1983 product. I agrued to no avail. My Boggs graded an 7 and an 8 , sold the 7.

A fellow collector requested 1998 Finest boggs be added ( omitted accidently) 3 months and counting.

Welcome to the boards. I'm not completely sure if every card has to be graded by PSA to start a registry. I collect Nolan Ryan cards, and it's divided into two sets - basic and master. The basic set is just the main issues - regular Topps, Donruss, Fleer, etc. The Master set includes everything - reginal stuff, subsets, parallels, minor brands etc. Maybe the best way to go would be to start a basic registry, then as you're working on that you will find yourself picking up a little knowledge about what you'd like to see in the master set. Since you will probably be the only one doing the set, you will be able to add the cards you think should be on there without much problem. I can't imagine the basic set being more than 15 or 20 cards. Having the cards slabbed and able to do a little something more with them than sit back and stare at them really added to the collecting aspect for me.
  • Welcome to the boards.

I thought i heard that Oil Can was making a comeback the other day. Seriously
Thought i heard it on the Rome show or something. Perhaps i'm just losing it!

  • At the age of 45 he is playing for the Rox in an Independant League. The hope is to be noticed by the Red Sox and at least get invited to camp next year. Not likely to happen but he does seem to have his mental issues under control now.

It's funny that his big claim to fame is his name. If he went by Dennis Boyd, nobody would really have cared much about him one way or the other. He's kind of like OJ Simpson in that respect (to paraphrase Chris Rock) - if he wasn't a football player, he would have just been Orenthal the bus driving murderer.

And what exactly were his mental issues?

    Did OCB have OCD?

  • << <i> And what exactly were his mental issues? >>

Alcoholism and what he has claimed to be a fear of success due to thw way he grew up in Meridan, MS. His problems and break downs were well documented in the Boston newspapers and SI. SI claimed tha he was the next big thing and gave him the cover. As soon as he started to have problems and his stats dropped, SI did another cover about the fall of Dennis Boyd.

"One of 14 children of Negro Leaguer Willie James Boyd, the flamboyant, moody, and high-strung Oil Can is one of baseball's underachievers, plagued by a hot temper and persistent shoulder problems. Boyd emerged as one of the AL's top starters in 1985, pitching 272.1 innings despite an emaciated-looking 6'2" 160-lb frame, fanning 12 batters in a game twice, and winning 15 games. At the same time, he became disliked around the league for his co cky demeanor and animated fist-pumping and finger-wagging on the mound. In 1986 Boyd had 11 wins by mid-July, but flew into a rage when he was left off the All-Star squad and was suspended by the Red Sox before checking into a hospital with emotional problems. He returned in August to add five more wins during Boston's pennant run, but a recurring blood clot in his right shoulder forced him onto the DL five times from 1987 to 1989 and has threatened to end his career. His nickname comes from his Mississippi hometown, where beer is called oil."
