the auction is for this gold half eagle,

link

scroll down to the main picture of the obverse.

Please enlarge the photo and examine the pixels.
Some areas appeared to have been smoothed out.

If this is the case, just tell me yes, so I can avoid this seller.

thanks.

You are just not going to be able to tell if the image was altered at a higher resolution becasue the chages are just going to get smeared with the down resing of the image.

then here is something to compare with.

    david lawrence auction. same coin

same coin, same year, same mint.
but a picture from david lawrence's crew, which
    looks unaltered to me.

Opera and other web browsers can magnify the picture.
To me the pics, I have used photoshop before, at the pixel level,
    are modified.

    david's are not.

look for areas where the pixels blur. concentrate on the lusterous areas.
notice a smoothing, where other places are pixels of the same size.

Maybe i am wrong, that is why i am asking for advice.

The blurring I see seems to be from compression, not anything malicious...

Looks like a smudge on the slab to me.

As I see that coin--it is not worth buying, and here is why. It is very common and basically just bullion. The coin has a very weak strike judging by the hair definition.

It will sell at a decent price because gold is on the up tick--but this coin is just a way to spend money and that's it.image

For comparison purposes...Hccinc photo on the left...DLRC on tthe right. (DLRC image was slightly increased in size)

  • I don't think you can tell alteration in photoshop from the image here. When you enlarge the image in a program, it (the program) is making the decisions on which pixels to duplicate and smooth.

  • There appears to be an "S" on the reverse....
