What to collect....???

What is the mintage for the 1979 proof clear s and 1981 proof clear s? I cant find any info. My other question is do you think prestige sets are overvalued? What about the 1992-2005 silver proof sets? Finally, what about the proof silver american eagles? (other then 1995-W) Trying to decide what i should collect. Any help will be appreciated!!!

As far as what to collect, thats for you to decide. Go get books and magazines on coins and pick a series that interests you. Research that series history and then collecting it will be that much more enjoyable. Go pick up some low grade or less expensive coins of your intended series and learn to grade them.

Coins by them self are great, coins with history are exciting. My favorite series are Seated Coins. Lots of rich history and several varieties.

A decade ago most everyone would tell you to collect coins minted for circulation (with few exceptions). However, I don't think that applies to this generation of collectors. The hobby and industry has exploded with all sorts of areas of specialization.

Had somebody told me that modern proof sets would increase in value by 12 fold in just 3 or 4 years, I would have laughed in their face. The entire modern explosion is quite interesting in so many ways.

I would suggest that you dabble in something inexpensive while you learn what area sparks your interest. Fill a few penny albums or buy a few proof sets if you need a fix...just save the big money until you have confidence in your knowledge of coins.

It's a shark infested ocean of coin dealers and con jobs if you don't know what it is that you don't know.

No one knows the mintage of the "clear" 1979 and 81 because they are varieties. In my opinion they are a bit overpriced with over 1600 graded for each by PCGS, so far. Frankly I would start a type set of each coin made since 1840 in very good, and look up the populations and history of each. Buy Breen's Encyclopedia for 50 bucks, it has everything you need to know for a start. Have fun---image

I think if you have to ask what to collect, you should hold onto your money. Wait until you find something that really turns you on and then ask for advice on how to go about collecting it.

Start collecting some type coins. That's how I started out and ended up collecting a series I never thought that I would/

Most of the '81-S type II proofs are estimated to be in the 300,000 to 600,000 range with
the '79-S t II's a little higher. I suspect these estimates are a little high.

The prestige proof sets already had a little premium to the coins before this recent increase
in price. It's always risky to pay a substantial premium for packaging but this may be a lit-
tle less true than in the past.

Looks like you like Frankies. You might look around for beautifully toned MS-67 examples an start a set SLOWLY. You don't say who old you are but one of my first purchases was the set from the year I was born in a top grade per the PCGS population book.

  • I think there are lots of 1992-2005 Silver Proof Sets. My wife has all the proof sets going back to 1941. Personally I think the sets from 1960 to now are pretty available so am less interested in them than harder to find coins.

Why not try to find some inexpensive examples of different types of US coins? Try for one of each type you can find. If you find yourself very interested in one particular series than you have answered your question.
