I highly reccomend that everyone buy the Coinage of the Americas conference books
The American Numismatic Society has a series of books out that are an accumulation of the papers presented at the Coinage of the Americas conference. Each book has scholarly articles on a particular topic (for example, there is a separate book on gold coins, one on silver, one on copper, one on silver dollars, etc.). The books are around 200-250 pages and the articles/papers are written by leading scholars. I am always amazed by what I learn from these books/papers. I even buy the ones that are not in my area of collecting interest.
For example, in the America's Silver Coinage book, there is a very interesting article called "Industrial Revolution adn Die Production" written by David Cohen. I found that article to be particularly interesting. At the end of the article, he shows pictures of the last digits in each date from 1840-1873. It is really interesting to see how many different styles of numbers were used in those years. I just thought everyone would be interested.
The books can be obtained for a song on various websites and the bay of E.
