What is special about TOPPS 1978 #20 Rose?

There are some wide price swings in the subject card. Why is the PSA 9 version sought after?
Is it better to own many of the 9s or just a few of the 10s?

Thanks.

I am not sure what you mean - this is a dime a dozen card, especially in PSA 9. I don't have an SMR handy, but it used to list in there for $115 in PSA 9, and regularly sell for less than half of that on Ebay. The 10's have been cropping up lately, but even they haven't been selling for anywhere near asking price.

If you are looking to "invest", this is most certainly not your card. And - I am a 1978 set collector and fan.

It is a pretty common card to come across in a 9. The SMR for the PSA 9 is currently $70. The going ebay rate is $20-$25, with one ending every few day.

If recollection serves, it is also one of the few double printed card in the 78 set. It is a very plentiful card.

That is a chief complaint of mine regarding 70's graded cards. You have a psa 9 pete rose sell for $25-35 and a psa 9 common that is a 1/5 or whatever that sells for $40-55.

    That aint right.

Julen, that is not only the case in 70's cards - it applies in many older sets as well (though, not as much now as few years ago in the early days of the Registry). A low pop common, when a few Registry members need it, will often bring more than a similarly graded star. Of course, the star card should hold more resale potential down the road if you decide to sell it...

I most certainly can be wrong, but I thought that 78 Rose card was TRIPLE printed ??

You might be right, soft - I know it was at least double-printed.

  • Isn't that the card that reflects either in his stats 3000 or 4000. Hits maybe why it is sought after?

Definitely a triple printed card. On the uncut sheets there would be three of them together while there were only one of the other players and two of the double printed players. PSA 10s only bring about $300-400 on average which is well below what superstars/HOFers from that year bring (Reggie, Brett, Ryan, etc...).

I have seen the 10's popping up but I have yet to see one that I would want. I have a nice 9 in my set as it is and have no
    itch for any more.
