Can anyone help with this piece of the Boston Garden floor?

Hi,

Does anyone have any idea what the white box is on this piece of the Boston Garden floor available in Leland's auction? According to the description, it's a 25" by 25" square.

Thanks,

Tom

If you take a look at this pic with the goals in place, it looks like the squares may be "aligners" (benchmarks) so they properly position them? Otherwise, when moving the large goals into place, they would have to use the "key" as a reference which would be much harder to accurately place them. If you notice, there are actually two boxes on each goal post area.

    Just a thought.

edit: I took the small pic from the Leland auction site and stacked them on top of each other to demonstrate how they go if we had both sections?

Mike, you are a GENIUS. Thanks very much for your help. The photos are awesome.

Any chance the squares could be from the half-court area (right side, out-of-bounds on your photo)? The Leland's write-up and picture indicate that there are a lot of tennis shoe scuff marks in the square. I was wondering if the square could have held the "shoe cleaner" surface which players wipe their shoes on prior to entering the court.

    Thanks again!

If you look carefully, there are no squares at half court - I did see a variation of this paint job where instead of the squares, there are extensions of the court in the goal areas to properly position the goals and there is a long rectangle painted box at half court.

I'm pretty sure these squares are at the end courts where the hoops are positioned.

this pic shows the midcourt with a rectangle box rather than the squares in question. Also, Tom - genius?

And finally, here is the variation on the green paint job I was talking about - notice that instead of the two white boxes used to "position" the goal posts, they have a green box "extension" at each end where they position the goal posts - probably over the extensions rather than using the white boxes to align the hoops.

Thanks again Mike. By the way, did you receive a private message from me? I'm beginning to think I don't know how to send those things.

I received the message and PM'ed you back. Now I realize you don't have you PM turned on - go to your profile and scroll down to the line that says: "allow private messages" and press the "on" radio button.

I will then resend you the answer to your question.
