If I were going to put together a world gold type set.....

I wonder what coins would be in it. image Is there a checklist someplace that I can use as a guide instead of just buying blind? I have some nice pieces already and would love to make this a long term project. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • I've always wanted to make a Gold Standard set from the early 20th century. It would have a variety of cool coins in it like:
    The french Rooster
    German 20 Mark gold
    Swiss 20 Franc coin
    Canadian $5 gold coin
American $5 gold indian half eagle
    Gold Sovereign

    The list goes on.
  • Thats the problem the list goes on and on...lol.....Thats why I might just pick a denomination and have some fun.

The stuff DH listed is the best start. Late 1800s to early 1900s gives a wide range of gold coins, most standardized against each other making an appealing set. Plus, they're affordable!
  • You might want to look at Austria, Russia, and Mexico.

Exactly, the coins I mentioned are all the same size and pretty much the same denomination (albeit in a different currency). $5=1 Pound=20 Marks=20 Francs etc.

Here's a nice selection of European gold, from a link that stork posted a while ago, although the price of the completed board is too much.

  • I think older gold coins are more fascinating myself as the history is somewhat richer. I have a Columbia Escudo 1798, and an 1811A France 20F. Some newer ones also, a German 1888 20 Mark and 1909 ten Mark, a Mexican MS 1945 2 Peso... a variety sample of the world. Its not exactly a collection, though. I guess I could be persuaded to part with some image.

I mostly agree with Darkhorse, with the following changes/clarifications/additions:

    French Rooster 20 Franc
    German 20 Mark gold
    Swiss 20 Franc coin
Canadian $5 gold coin or Maple Leaf bullion coin
American $10 gold eagle (1907-1933), Saint_Gaudens $20 double eagle (1907-1933), or Gold American Eagle (GAE) bullion coin
    UK Gold Sovereign
    Austrian Gold 1 Ducat
    Mexico 10 pesos
    Denmark 10 Kroner
South Africa Krugerrand bullion coin or sovereign (sovereign is identical to UK sovereign, just the mint-mark changes)
    Netherlands 10 Gulden
    Russia 5 Roubles
    Venezuela 10 bolivars
    Sweden 10 Kronor
    Cuba 5 Pesos
