Remeber when: the second item I unearthed...

The year was 1990 or 1991, it was a cold Winter morning. I hoped in the car with my folks for a journey I would long remeber. I was a young 16 year old kid at a card show in Cranston, RI. The latest buzz at this show was some guy that had found a bunch of unopened "JUMBO" 5 cent 52 Topps packs. I was collecting 3 sets at the time, 1955 Topps, 1959 Fleer Ted Williams, and sparsely 1952 Topps, so this was incredible news! I walked around the show and saw a hoard of people gawking at 2 or 3 showcases on the lower level of the show. I went over and saw the most beautiful cards I had ever laid eyes on. I really could't afford much at the time, but I felt my money was best spent on the item below. I purchased this wrapper from Alan Rosen I believe immediately after his find of 52 topps 5 cent packs. This was my first and only purchase from Mr Vg-Ex (very greedy-expert) I am not sure if people were just telling the story of the find that day, if he had some leftovers, or whatever. Take this sotry as you will! Does anyone know the year and date of his 1952 Topps find?

Are you talking about Mr. Mint's first big purchase? I don't know where the book is but if you are talking about the purchase he made from a Topps driver who had died and his son was selling the cards...it was in Boston....he narrates the story about how he borrowed a lot of cash to make the deal...I'm going to guess it was around 1980...he paid the guy something like 95 grand - he immediately flipped the stuff for a nice profit - of course by today's standards that would have been millions...on his web, he states there were 65 RC's!!!

If someone has the book - True Mint - they can look it up for you.

  • I believe the famous find you are referring to was in 1986 in Quincy, Mass. The cards weren't wax though. They were "loose". The seller's father worked for the GRAYCO toy company and the cards were supposed to be a promotional giveaway with every toy sold. This is according to one of Rosen's books. He spent close to $100k and there was like 60 of every high number and mid number or something ridiculous like that. Cards were mostly untouched, probably the bulk were 8's and the rest either slightly lower or 9's and 10's. Boy would I have been happy to been in on it when he flipped them. He was selling the Mantle's in SCD for $3500, Mays $450, complete mid run for $1100, etc.
