I'll take the PSA 10 instead of the BGS 9.5, and with the savings I'll buy a nice PSA 9 Reggie Jackson rookie, or a PSA 7 Mantle rookie ... or a car.

At least two bidders haven't been paying attention to Beckett's new strategy and the resulting general flood of BGS 9.5's into the market in recent months. One of them will be a very unhappy camper when he does realize it.

I know that we are not to think of our collecting as an investment, but I do not see how anyone who spends this kind of money is crazy, IMO.

Weren't these going for $30k plus for Gem Mint copies at one point? There's nothing "perceived" about the value of this card- it's hard to find nice copies and he's the greatest player to ever play the game, an argument you really can't make about anybody else in any sport. As far as the prices go, if you look at the card and not the holder, the BGS is the only truly mint card in the bunch- The PSA has some chipping on the bottom right, the GAI has even worse chipping, the PSA 9 is OC, and the BCCG has a bad corner among other problems. I can't believe the GAI went for 5k, but the others are in line for what this will normally go for. Sure the prices are inflated compared to countless other cards, but I think the days of Jordan cards going down are over (unless he pulls a Kobe which he is not stupid enough to do).

I guess if I had money to burn I would still be frugel about it and buy a bunch of PSA 9s for what that BGS 9.5 went for.

<< <i>considering the unopened product still out there >>

I wonder how much 1986 Fleer Basketball unopened there really is out there - I would bet there isn't much anymore. Cases of it are worth around $100,000 today - but I can't remember the last time I saw one. And, almost every full box you see selling on Ebay seems to be part of a scam...

Just as an FYI, a BCCG 9 is the equal to a BGS 7 (Near Mint or Better). a BCCG 10 is closer to a 9, but it's all still garbage, so who cares.

  • My comment about the "perceived value" of this card was referring to the gaps in perceived quality between the grades. for example the BGS 9.5 is worth more than 10X the PSA 9 price? is a single edge flake, or a couple pixel diefference in centering really worth an extra 11,000 bucks? there are indeed plenty of unopened packs out there. With 2 jordans per box, your looking at a jordan for every 15 unopened packs on average. the PSA pop count for Jordan alone is 1700+ 9s and over 200 10s. The total pop count for the relatively small set is pushing 90,000. By comparison, the mother load 52 topps set has 3 times the number of cards in the set and the total POP is 15,000 LESS than the 86 fleer set. there are 3 times as many 86 fleer jordans in PSA 9 (ALONE!) then EVERY PSA graded 52 topps mantle from 1 to 10. those numbers as well as the high quantity of GPA sets over 9 seems that the quality from packs is indeed quite high.

It will be interesting to watch the price trends as time passes.

Like the Tiger Woods SI for Kids and SP Jeter rookies, the Jordan has only trended downwards in the case of 10s and 9.5's. I know I'd much rather have and would feel more secure owning a PSA 10 than a BGS 9.5, and if I could get the card for that much less, I'd be quite happy.

I think in many cases the graded cards of certain key rookies in all sports will continue to go up, especially in lower condition (5-7). Think of the thousands of counterfeit Jordan, Nolan Ryan, etc. RC's that have been popping up on ebay in the recent years. I collect Ryan cards and have amassed over 10 thousand, but never had a rookie, but was so afraid to buy one raw and couldnt afford a mint one, I settled for a PSA 5, but I know its real. Maybe that is the main reason for the outrageous prices on some of the Jordan rookies, people want mint ones and figure the only way to get them is to pay the dough.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • Goudey you actually will get 3-4 Jordans on average per untampered with box. And as a side note the last BGS 9.5 Jordan just sold for $10,600 so apparently they might be coming down a lil bit in price. BGS 9.5 MJ LINK

I agree with you completely. There are many cards I wouldn't dare buy raw just for fear of it being altered/fake, that I would rather take a 'low' grade (like your 5) that I know is real. However, I have seen some great lower graded cards like this that have great eye appeal.
  • I stand corrected then, so the pull rate for a Jordan RC could be as high as one every 9 packs?!?!

    that is amazing.

Sure is - the set is only 132 cards, and you get 12 cards per pack X 36 packs per box. Problem is, there is a sequence to the cards that many people have figured out. And, you can see the top and bottom cards through the wax wrapper with a little effort. The packs with Jordan RC's in them, therefore, are going to be even tougher to find. Someone posted the exact details of the sequence here a while back, and I'm sure a search will find it.

I noticed that some GAI graded packs say "from a full box". Probably for this very reason...though, who knows if the box wasn't searched first?

At this point in time, why would anyone go thru the wax box route to get a Jordan RC? As a matter of fact, why would anyone go thru any wax to get a 86/87 Fleer BKB RC? You can buy any of these cards for a reasonable price.

A case would be a nice investment, but anything opened today has been searched.
