Remember when: one item I unearthed this weekend

I will be updating this wekend with new threads. I found a treasure chest in my basement.
REMEBER WHEN....Willie May's AUTOGRAPH was actually LEGIBLE?? I am 99% this was signed back in the late 60's. I picked it up from an old timer in 1989. WIllie's sig now looks like Ftttt Vtttt

I truly believe if you were to send that to PSA and have holdered and then sell it with that idea in mind, it would bring a lot of attention!

I have rarely seen a Willie that nice!!! Congratulations on your treasure hunt.

I think Sharpies were available starting in '71, but there were Flair felt pens for at least 10 years before that.
Nice sig, either way. Willie was probably a lot nicer back then too- I"ve seen people walk away from his signing table just fuming, and a promoter vow never to have him again.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

What was the name of the first popular felt tip pen?
    Flair?

I seem to remember using them in the late 60's(?).

You know Win, I hadn't even thought about the invention of the sharpie when trying to date this auto. However, I am 99% sure this 1964 Mays would not qualify for a "rookie year" auto. image

Just looking at the two sigs here - as an amateur and a guess? I would say the 64T Willie auto is real.

The way Willie spaces the "ay" in his last name looks very similar and would be hard to forge IMO.

Great to see how people's signatures change, for the worse, over time. Just look at your own for example. After signing check upon check and mortgage paperwork! However some "loops" and "garlands" never change. Imagine how many autos Wilie has done!
  • It doesnt mean he signed the card in 1964 image.

I still call them Flair pens, like I call all copiers Xerox machines and all tissue Kleenex. Im an old dog.

Is Willie just an a**hole or something?

On another note, how do you create your own avatar? I checked the profile section, but it only has avatars made by other people.
