    Well if it's miscut then it has to get the qualifier - simple as that.

    There are far worse PSA 1s. I've seen a few '52 Mantles that were just outright abused.

  • It's not PSA, but here's a bad Mantle graded 1.

    beaten

    But that sure beats the fakes!

    I'm not much into grading, but will any card get at least a grade of 1 as long as it is authentic?

    The PSA 1 Honus Wagner I saw (I am not sure how many 1's there are) was really, really beat up.

    I am assuming you are going to find only the most of valuable cards (mantle 52 topps, wagner 206, etc) get really really rough graded cards.
  • This one is so bad it didn't even get a 1 but it has a great history and story behind it. Funny...the back is at least NMT.

    Is that your card? If so...when you have the time, could you scan the back? Would like to see it. I'm guessing that someone had the card scotch taped to an album.

  • Yep, bought it at least 10 yrs ago. Story has it that it was taped in a Yankee's locker in the 50's.

    1 with a qualifier strikes me as funny, as though the 1 isn't enough of an insult. I love the 1953 Mantle and hope one day to own one. But, that one can stay in someone else's collection! Man, that card is beat like a rented sports car.

    someone actually paid over $1,500.00 for that GAI MANTLE. I think it would be kinda cool if PSA began creamating cards and putting the dust into the slabs, would people buy that also????image
  • If you have a 1 with a qualifer on a registery. does mean that it is treated as a -2?

    Twins
    This comes up from time to time - here are the Q rules:

    9Q = -2
    8Q = -2
    7Q = -2
    6Q = -2
    5Q = -2
    4Q = -2
    3Q = -1
    2Q = -1
    1Q = no deduction

    The biggest disparity in grades is a "1"
    Some look truly abused others look very collectible.
    Here is a PSA-1 of a T206 Hofer that I won off of DSL 2 years ago for under $20.00. Its a great card w/ a El Principe De Gales back and has at tiny amount of paper missing on the back as well as stamp mount or tape residue. Overall it still displays better then some 3's I've seen...jay

    Jay-I'd collect a whole set of 1's if they all displayed that nicely. That might be the nicest looking "1" I've seen. I agree, it looks better than a lot of 3's, even 4's that I've seen (at least from the front)

    That 53 Mantle is absolutely awful, such a gorgeous card....in such terrible shape.

    I wish I could find a really low grade Mantle like that. That's the only way I could afford one.

    That card is way better than a 1. PSA doesn't take in to account the overall condition of card when they grade it?
  • no. you can take a gem mint 10, crack it out, put a single needle hole in it, send it back and you will have a "1".

    goudeygold,

    I agree that you are correct. That is exactly what would happen. On the other hand, I think that is way too technical on PSA's part. I think that a little common sense should play into something like that. Maybe an otherwise 9 or 10 (if it had a pin hole in it) maybe should be downgraded to a 4 or 5 or something like that. That T206 card that was just pictured is ridiculous. NO COMMON SENSE AT ALL. That is way too technical.

  • You will find many people who agree with you. I agree to an extent, especially with speck paper loss on the reverse.

    Beat it is. Would you rather have a pack fresh 7, that sat in wax paper for 50 years or a beat up "authentic" that sat in a Yankee locker and tells a story? It's not a beat up card, it is essentially game used memorabilia image

    Back to the age old question...do you collect for the money or the history? If it's for the money...you are not a collector just an opportunist. Just a thought.

    I think it's cool that the card was taped to a locker - and I would want it for that reason - but I don't think everyone caught your "history" and were just responding to the "beauty" of the card as such.

    I do agree, tho, if one collects for the historical connections, games played, the relationships to our culture etc. - one is enriched beyond any compensation.

    As for me? I'm in it for the money!

    Sorry the young lady disturbs you - my regular sig line went down - I'm not hosting it and can't find my copy - and I put this up as a joke to Pandrews and Cornholio - it's not going to be up there very long - but I would hardly consider this porno.

    This being the topic of discussion, what do you think is the best search
    parameters to locate PSA 1? Perhaps, "PSA 1" or "pr-fr"? Here is a 1951
    Bowman Ted Williams PSA 1 that is pretty beat.

    1951 Bowman Ted Williams PSA 1

    Here is also a 1951 Bowman Whitey Ford PSA 1:
